Connecting to FTP sites

I am not able to connect to any FTP sites using Internet Explorer on Windows
XP SP2. I am able to connect using other FTP clients. Turning Passive FTP
on or off makes no difference.

I tried to do an Ethereal capture to see where the FTP connection was
failing. It turns out IE is not sending out any packets at all to the FTP
site. IE immediately fails with "Cannot find server or DNS error". I get
the same result when I try to access the server by IP address in IE.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Michael Pfeiffer

Perhaps the troubleshooting information in this article may help:

Here's how to correct the problem after opening Port 21 via the
SP2 firewall Exceptions tab:

1. Open Internet Explorer >Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab

2. Uncheck the box: "Use passive FTP (for firewall & DSL modem capability)

Thanks for the reply, Carey. Unfortunately the article didn't help. What
seems strange to me is that it looks like IE isn't even really trying to get
to the network adapter. It almost looks like it thinks it's not connected to
the network and gives an error without really trying to make the FTP
connection. But it only happens when trying to connect to FTP sites. I can
connect to HTTP sites properly.
