When attempting to browse a FTP site using ftp:// (f. ex. ftp://ftp.sunet.se)
using Internet Explorer 6.0 with a proxy server defined, it fails, giving the
following message:
"FTP Folder Error: Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed
the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.
Details: The operation timed out."
Listening to the network traffic reveals three SYN packets attempting to
access the ftp site directly (no communication with the defined proxy at all).
FTP Requests for exact file-names, however, are handled correctly.
In an attempt to verify the source of this error, I tried browsing the site
using Firefox and Opera, and both of these browsers handle this correctly.
Internet Explorer appears to be handling ftp requests as regular
file-requests, and ignores the proxy setting when browsing ftp sites. When
Transparent proxy is configured, it works just fine.
This fails regardless of proxy server software.
It would be nice if this could be fixed in IE7.
