Connect to internet via another computer

After many hours of sweat and curse I have a network - Desktop and Laptop both XP Pro, using crossover cable, Desktop was set as This computer connects directly to internet, laptop as connecting to internet via another computer and by some magic, at last both computers can see each other. I can explore files on both machines from either machine, but when I try Internet Explorer on laptop, it says "Cannot find server or DNS error". Desktop connection is by broadband and the only reason I want to connect from laptop is to have broadband speed for updates, so don't want to use its 56K modem or buy any fancy gizmos. My problem setting up local network was solved when I disabled Internet Explorer firewall AND gave my laptop safe zone access in Zone Alarm. I have Norton Systemworks 2002 with autoprotect enabled, AVG 6.0 (free version) and Zone Alarm (free version). Laptop I.E. shows no dialup settings.
If any of this sounds like I know what I'm talking about, I DON'T, so help me get at the internet from my laptop with simple words and no jargon - I've looked at all the newsgroup chat and don't understand any of the funnies like DNS!!!

I have very similiar setup - 2 pc's connected via
crossover cable, 1 an ICS host, the other an ICS client.
I can share files and printer, but have the same problem
connecting to the web from the ICS client. It seems mine
is a DNS problem as I cannot ping url from cmd. I can
however ping the NetBios name of the ICS host. The ICS
client has the correct DNS server ip address (the IP of
the ICS host). I have disabled 3rd party firewall,
ensured the XP firewall is not enbaled on ICS cleint nic
and searched through MS technet. Has anyone been
succesful setting up ICS through a crossover cable or
give any further tips.? You could try tips as stated in
technet docs - 311070, 308007 and try going via a hub and
re-apply SP1, as there is a known issue with internet
timeouts pre sp1. Any help appreciated as daughter wont
be happy on the 25th when her pc is not on the internet
in her room.

Dear Grumpy

I sympathise as I have managed to get the laptop and PC to spk to eachother
but everything is VERY slow (even showing eachother in explorer) - but
particulalry transferring files!!

I am unable to help you with your problem but if you can give me any
pointers on speeding things up I would be hugely grateful.

PS: I have just ordered two newworking for dummies books from Amazon so I
will keep you posted if I get any further insight when they arrive!

Thanks

Nick Luck

Well, out of all that, I understood about every fourteenth word (i.e. you've got a similar problem and know a damned sight more than I do). I have to hope the next person to answer is one of my grandsons - they even know how to work my video recorder!!

Hey!! Who did that???
Here I sit, minding my own business. I noticed that I could no longer see the other machine from both machines. I thought my laptop had changed its address, so I added the new one to Zone Alarm, but still couldn't see it, so shut down Zone Alarm in case this was doing it.
Then Lo and behold, suddenly on my laptop up pops another entry in "Network Connections", namely under a title of "Internet Gateway" it now shows "Broadband on Desktop". Maybe it's got something to do with me being connected to this newsgroup. Who knows? Anyway, I'm not switching off either machine whilst I do the Windows Updates - 14 Critical, 19 Win XP and 2 Drivers. It's 6:30pm where I am and I do hope it all gets done before I need to let Santa Claus in through the chimney (the 15MB criticals have already downloaded and are installing as I type this. God bless new technology!). If anybody understands what's going on, please let me know

Well, this is fascinating.
I'm now communicating from my laptop, after swome 20 minutes to download and install aqll those lovely critical updates and two driver updates. The process had some sort of glitch when I tried to download 65MB of WinXP updates. But if this connection continues over the Christmas holiday, I'll be trying them again.
Anyway, somehow I'm connected at my laptop via the desktop. The only things I can think of which may have allowed this is that I had both machines running, also was actually on the net (in the newsgroup) AND also disconnecte4d my Zone Alarm.
Incidentally, I had to reboot after all the updates and after doing so, that Internet gateway was no longer showing as being in Network Places, but now that I look whilst typing this, it's appeared again. New technology - at least I'm hot stuff with my mobile phone. Closing off now to restart Zone Alarm and see if I get unconnected.
