Conflict With AVG (Free) and Ad-Aware 2007?

N

NobodyYouKnow

For the last week or so I've had to re-boot on each daily update from AVG.
Checking on the AVG website the only reference I could find was someone said
they had been having the same problems but uninstalled Ad-Aware 2007 and the
problem went away.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I've had Ad-Aware 2007
since it came out, but this is the first time I've had the problem with AVG.
Thinking maybe an update from Ad-Aware is causing this.

I've been running the AVG (both AVG full and free editions) with
Ad-Aware 2007 for several months now without complaint. The two
coexist quite well.

Note that I don't have Ad-Watch active (I'm using Windows
Defender resident shield for that), and I _don't_ run both
Ad-Aware's and AVG's scanners simultaneously. Also, you could
see problems if either AVG or Ad-Aware have items quarantined.

I recently finished building up a refurbed laptop, and loaded AVG
_before_ installing Ad-Aware. I also knew the laptop was
completely clean before installing Ad-Aware.

I have avg and some of the updates not all needed reboots because AVG said
so
this has nothing to do with adaware 2007
AVG made some major updates for certain trojans and also made a small
version update.

I got an update today and no reboot was necessary

I went through that for the last 2 weeks. Each time I had to reboot, I lost
my AV and my shield. I went to the AVG forum, they had me do all sorts of
things, but nothing helped.

It got so bad, I couldn't even use my e-mail, as it wouldn't scan it. After
being totally frustrated, I called my servers tech support, and had to
install their free AV and Anti Spyware program. I am not that happy with it
as I was AVG, but for now, at least I have some protection.

Only other thing I run is Spywareblaster. Strange thing is, hubby runs AVG
and never has to reboot??? He has XP Pro, I only have XP, but we both have
the same model computers, so go figure. Neither of us run WD. Computer was
checked for any viruses, came back clean, and the problem seemed to stup
everyone.

After things settle down with all this holiday stuff, I am having someone
look at the machine, give it a good cleaning and try AVG again, as I really
liked it. I also noticed alot of people on the AVG forum had this issue.

Hope you can resolve your issue with AVG, I know I am hoping to go back to
it. Good luck!!!

weird because i have adaware 2007 and AVG on all my clients computers and no
one ever complained they are having a problem with AVg

It is weird Robin, as I never had a problem with AVG, and as I said, hubby
hasn't had any. I did notice one thing, AVG doesn't get along too well with
ATT/Yahoo DSL, I seemed to see alot of folks who had that, which I have,
having the same problem.

Oh well, after the crazyness calms down for the holidays, I will have a
friend, who really knows what he is doing check it out. It might be something
really simple, but God knows I can't find it, nor could anyone on the AVG
forum.

Hope you had a nice Turkey day, and that bathroom is coming along. I'm still
at it with mine. Oh well, it will get done sooner or later, hopefully sooner.
LOL

Take care, and TTYS. :)

I hadn't had to either before last week and I've had 2007 since it came out,
and SE for a very long time. Todays update went fine. I had a couple of
quarantined items in AVG and George suggested that could be the problem. I
removed them, but not sure if that's why things are okay today. Guess I'll
keep checking. Thanks for the input.

That's another weird thing, JJ. I've had ATT/Yahoo for several years and
never had a problem with it and AVG. These computers just do that to keep
us on our toes. :) Hope you're successful in figuring out your problem.
You might check (as a poster earlier suggested) and see if AVG has any
quarantined items. Everything is just a guess right now. Since today's
update went okay I'm hoping things are back to normal.

I have AVG Pro and the free Ad Aware on my XP Pro and I now don't have to
reboot. However, a few months ago I had this problem. Having the Pro
version, I asked for tech support. I sent them some sort of screen print or
two and they concluded that a file in the AVG was corrupted and that I had
to re-download and install it. That worked.

Like I said, after the holidays and all the crazyness goes away, I am going
to have a friend look at my machine. AVG forum folks couldn't find a problem,
my tech support couldn't figure it out, so God knows I can't. LOL

Att/Yahoo uses a Norton product for their free AV and Spyware, and I am not
a big fan of Nortons. Had them for years, and the cost was outrages, and I
feel Norton slows down my machine. I need a BIG vacuum to suck out all the
bad things that might be floating around, but for now, as long as this is
free and working, I'll deal with it.

Hope your's is going to behave now, I think we have enough problems without
our computers making our lives nuts. Good luck, and I'll let you know how
things progress in the future. Take care...:)

It could be Pro works better with it. Like I said, hubby is having no
problems, and only difference is, he has Pro, I don't. I think something is
either missing, or corrupt as well, but for now, I have no time to
investigate.

Glad you have your problem solved, hopefully mine will be soon. The AVG
folks, and even my tech support had me go through all sorts of cleanings
etc., but noone found a thing wrong. Oh well, not going to lose any sleep
over it for now, at least I have protection for now.

I appreciate all suggestions, trust me, it is nice to have folks try and
help. Take care, and thanks....:)

I am not surprised because you are on a wrong newsgroup where you are not
likely to get any assistance when your free non-microsoft product hits
trouble. Have you ever thought of posting your query to to the correct
newsgroup?

I suggest contact your ISP like: AT&T Internet Services or swbell.net or
SBCGLOBAL.NET. They should know how to deal with your problems. their
contact details is:

ok, i take it back.
Seems I had not done the lastest Ad-aware 2007 update and when i did
yesterday, AVG Pro started on 2 machines asking for reboots after doing
definition updates. I also noticed that on 5 of my clients computers who
are running ad-aware 2007 and did the same updates, their AVG free is also
asking for reboots after this update.
I am wondering what this update did to AVG
I just emailed AVG about the situation

one thing you can try is to download the program again and do a repair
instead of a reinstall and see if that fixes it.

Robin..tried that 3 times, no luck. As I stated, AVG forum and even ATT
couldn't get it to work right, that is why I had to resort to ATT's free
AV/ASpyware program.

Hope you hear something that might help, as I really liked the way AVG ran,
quick, and thorough. :)

AVg suggests to do a reinstall and see what happens.
If this doesn't work their other suggestion is to uninstall Ad-aware 2007
and see if the problem goes away and let them know
Since I have the latest updates from avg I will wait till tomorrow to see if
it wants a reboot again since i just did a reinstall
If that doesn't work i will uninstall ad-aware 2007 and see if the problem
goes away.
I found on a few fourms that when uninstalling ad-aware 2007 problem goes
away for them.
I will let you know which works or not

JJ and ny one else with this problem, I got this to work on almost all the
probmatic computers
the others I did this first- then downloaded the program again and did a
"repair instead of an install.:s

If AVG asks for a reboot after an update

please perform following procedure:

* Please run AVG Control Center->Update Manager->Settings->Advanced
tab-> use "Delete update temporary files" button.
* Reboot your PC.
* Try to update again.

See if this stops the reboots when it wants to update

also- i forgot this part

Bring up your AVGCC->(Double Click)Update

Manager->This will bring up the Properties

window where the default setting should be

'Update immediately' & 'Require confirmation

from user'.... should be checked

I've had no problems at all since the AVG update on Monday 11/26. I guess
just a minor glitch?
