Computer not accessible

C

cmar

I have a 3-computer Windows XP Pro LAN working through a router. The
internet access is fine. But when I try to access computer #1 from computer
#2, I get this error:
"Computer #1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resourse. The network path was not found."

All my network settings, and File and Printer sharing, seem normal. The
registry entry "restrict anonymous" is correct. I use Simple File and
Printer Sharing and have the Guest account enabled with no passwords. The
Local Security Policy settings seem right.

Thanks, CMA

CMA,

The most common problem would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal
firewall, or other security component. There are several other possibilities
too. Read this article with an open mind.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Since you've checked simple stuff like restrictanonymous, why not provide
"browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Posting the information here is better. It's safe, and convenient. And 3
computers should not generate too much text.

I have 3-computer LAN, with computer names C1, C2, C3, all Win XP Pro (SP2)
connected through router. Internet access is fine. C1 is by far the most
important system. IP address of C1 = 192.168.0.115; IP address of C2 =
192.168.0.116; IP address of C3 = 192.168.0.118.

to C3 Good ping.

OK, here are two things to start with:

1) C2:

Your original report says, in part:
C2 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Logon failure: user has not been given the requested logon type at
this computer.

That's a well known problem.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/01/look-at-complete-detail-in-error.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/01/look-at-complete-detail-in-error.html

You're using Network Neighborhood to access the computers. Depending upon which
computer is running as a browser, any computer with network problems can cause
problems for the others.

The C2 browstat reports a fourth computer:
1 backup servers retrieved from master C2
\\RIBLI

What is Ribli?

Now you're saying "Guest account is off on all three systems.", if the computers
are running Simple File Sharing, will indeed be a problem. But that contradicts
your earlier statement "I use Simple File and Printer Sharing and have the Guest
account enabled with no passwords.".

Certainly, you need to enable Guest for network access.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate

But, if that's not the only problem, you'll be back at square one.

Hi Chuck:
Ribli is C2. There are only 3 computers on the LAN. When I said Guest
account is off, I meant when one checks User Acounts on each system. But I
am using Simple File and Printer Sharing. I enabled Guest account following
instructions in your link about the "net user" command.
So the problem all along has been not having Guest
accounts enable in User Accounts?
Best, CMA

C

cmar

Having turned on Guest Accounts on C2 and C1, C2 is now accessible from the
other two computers. But C1 is not accessible.
What is mysterious is the C3 does not have Guest account turned on. Yet
C3 is accessible for file sharing.
So the remaining problem is C1.
Thanks, CMA

CMA,

If not the only problem, surely it will not help. With SFS, and activated Guest
account is essential. But the true test is DOES IT WORK?

So you munged the diagnostics. Gack.

What is the exact error or problem observed when "C1 is not accessible"? There
are no mind readers here, and the details are very useful.

OK, I will try to be patient with you. But please be patient with me too. And
please don't go to other threads and solicit advice. That's creates problems
for everybody.
# It's rude to the OP in the other thread. He's asking for help, and you're
trying to attract the attention of the helpers there for your problem.
# It's wasteful of your time. You might be given conflicting advice, and make
changes according to that advice. That will hamper your ability to process the
advice that I, or any other helper in this thread, might provide.
# It's wasteful of my time. I try to keep track of your systems, and when you
make changes without me knowing what you're changing, it hampers my ability to
help you.
Solve one problem in one thread, please.

OK, about the browser. If you're going to use Network Neighborhood, and
browsing, to access the computers, you have to have a master browser at all
times. Having no master browser will be a problem. So will having two or more
master browsers. Please read about the browser subsystem:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html

If you have but 2 computers on the LAN, you can have the browser running on
either computer, and it will not matter which computer. With 3 or more
computers, you should have 2 computers running the browser, and the 2 computers
should be the ones that will stay on and online, 24 x 7 x 52. If you have but 1
computer running the browser, and that computer goes offline for any reason, the
other 2 computers won't be able to see each other in Network Neighborhood.

OK, let's get to the "error = 53", which is, I suspect a significant symptom of
the problem. Now an "error = 53" is, according to "net helpmsg":
The network path was not found.
Now, "path not found" can have many causes. Please read my article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html

In your case, I will start with 2 specific things to check on each computer:
1) Is the computer running the Remote Registry service?
2) Is NetBT explicitly Enabled under TCP/IP Properties - Advanced - WINS?

Having answered those questions, hopefully in affirmative (after fixing things
if necessary), we will do some diagnostics. You will need to do each of the
following on all 3 computers. Follow instructions precisely please.
1) Create folder C:\Utility, and make it part of the Path.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-path-and-making-custom-program.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-path-and-making-custom-program.html
2) Download PSTools (free) from SysInternals.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/essential-tools-for-desktop-and.html#PSTools>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/essential-tools-for-desktop-and.html#PSTools
3) Copy PSTools components into C:\Utility.
4) Create my utility cpsserv, and save it in C:\Utility, as "cpsserv.cmd".

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/cpsserv-comprehensive-psservice-source.html
5) Run cpsserv, copy the output, and make it part of your next post.

Chuck

Hi Chuck:
Here are the cpsserv.txt files for the 3 systems.

Here are the "cpsserv.txt" files.

OK, there are 2 services missing.
1) C1 is missing sharedaccess aka Windows Firewall (Internet Connection
Firewall?) / Internet Connection Sharing service.
2) C3 is missing the Remote Registry service.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/services-running-on-your-computer.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/services-running-on-your-computer.html

Start these 2 services, then rerun "browstat status" on all 3 computers, and
post for all 3 computers.

Hi Chuck:
I started Remote Registry service on C3.
I could not start ICS on C1 because of Error 1068: "dependency service or
group failed to start."

Best, CMA

Hi Chuck:

Very interesting. RRS requires only RPC to function, as more than half the
processes in the computer do. If RPC was not running, your computer wouldn't.
So what's the problem?

Look in Event Viewer, and see if there's any details.
