Coda Codec Pack install file locks up

Subject says it all. Version is 3.3.(coda_v33.exe). Ctrl-Alt-Del is only
way to shut off install program. Codecs install it seems, but the
uninstall file fails to install correctly. Anybody else have that problem?

Are you sure you downloaded the file correctly? From what I remember, the
server terminates download often, I usually got it the 2nd or the 3rd try.

I just downloaded it and the install went fine. I'm on XP SP2, maybe it's
an XP thing.

Yup, that's kinda what I was thinking.

I redownloaded the file and it's the same size every time. I don't think
it would even run if it was a bad download. But thanks for asking.

In fact, same MD5 checksums on the downloads.

Yup, that's kinda what I was thinking.

Install hung in '98 also. Near as I can tell, the NSIS installer is falling
down after codec installation but before or during writing the uninstaller.
I don't even get the option to uninstall via Control Panel. Looking in the
Windows folder I find Un-Coda.exe as the uninstaller, but it has a file
size of 0bytes and contains nothing.I'm not sure exactly whats going on.
Have emailed the author to let him know of installer issue.

My observations exactly. And I too have emailed the author, but wonder
if the CCP is still being updated. Thanks for responding.

John, I had probs using codec packs a while back and I found this
guide at http://www.afterdawn.com/index-menu.cfm . But for the life
of me I can't seem to find it again. But I did save the text of the
guide. This cleared my system up of most all of the quirks of codec
interaction and plays most all audio/video.

I'm running this on Win98. Hope this helps!

Installation of Codecs

If you have a movie and cant seem to get it to play, odds are you have
a conflicting or missing codec. A CODEC (compressor/decompressor)
allows you to play movies and such. To find out exactly what codecs
are required to watch your movie, you can use one or both of two
excellent little utilities: AVICodec and Gspot. Both AVICodec and
GSpot can be used to determine the codecs required for a movie to
play. AVICodec, despite its name has better MPEG capabilities and thus
is reccomended for MPEG files (such as those for (S)VCDs). GSpot on
the otherhand is far more efficient for scanning AVI files. Both
programs offer unique features also, AVICodec allows you to queue up
and entire folder to for checking in addition to providing direct
links to sites where codecs can be downloaded; GSpot allows for
'rendering' of files (to check to see if the system can actually play
the file with the available codecs and to check for fakes. AVICodec
can be downloaded from
http://media.fastclick.net/w/get.media?sid=9388&m=5&url=http://avicodec.duby.info/
and GSpot can be downloaded from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

NOTES
1. Only install codecs that you need... installing mass codecs (i.e.,
like the way WindowsXP does with drivers) will not work since many of
the codecs are inter-conflicting. This is especially the case with the
Nimo Codec Pack.
2. If you get a FOURCC Code of 0. Odds are you have a FAKE. You can
check the FourCC using GSPot.

STEP-BY-STEP CODECs
1. UNINSTALL ALL YOUR CODECS (DivX, Nimo, XviD, etc). For more insight
on the nitty gritty codecs, see
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/81570

2. Install Indeo Codecs. This should include the Indeo3, Indeo4 and
Indeo5 Codecs. Grab it at http://codecs.nm.ru/iv5setup.exe or
http://home.eunet.no/~pereivin/iv5setup.exe

3. Install DivX 5.x You can grab it from
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/divx_pro_for_windows.cfm.
You can specify the installation path and whether or not to install
the DivX Player

4. If you want to, install the DivX Player You can specify the
installation path during the install. You can grab it from
http://download.divx.com/player/DivXPlayerInstaller.exe

5. Install the Nimo 5.0 Build 8. This is a messy one and can be
potentially ruinous if you choose the default installation. You can
grab it from: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/6/48608

Seabat,
Thanks, but I'm able to watch movies okay without any problems (well,
except for Quicktime's ludicrously small screen size, and yes... I use
Quicktime Alternative.) The reason I was trying to reinstall CCP is that
I'm now unable to take screen snapshots of a movie I'm viewing and then
save them as image files. What's weird is that I can take a snapshot,
and paste it into an image in any of my graphics programs, but when I
try to save the image and then later reopen it, all I get is a field of
black. My guess is that this isn't a codec problem so much as it is
the result of installing some MS update which also altered DDE and-or
OLE. Microsoft does that kind of thing.
Somewhere along the way though, I did see an error message that told
me I something like "the codec you are using doesn't allow doing a
screen print."

P.S. I also have AVICodec and GSpot installed and use them often. Of the
two, I like GSpot better, but they both have their high points.

I experienced the same problem when I tried using Meazure to capture a
freeze-frame from Windows Media Player. I pasted the picture into
IrfanView successfully, but upon saving it to a file, I ended up, as you
did, with an all-black picture. I eventually used WinDVD's "capture"
facility to save the freeze-frame successfully to a file that resulted
in a proper image.

I'd be interested to learn what is causing this. My impression is that
my initial procedure "used to work".

Seems to me that I didn't have this problem before I installed the
