"Category view" - disappears during a sort

I recently bought outlook 2003. I always set up my contacts to default to the “category viewâ€. Then when I am looking at my contacts – the categories are listed with the contacts within the categories. Lets say I am looking at my category of “vendorsâ€. Next I want to sort the vendors by company name, so I will click on the top of the company column to sort it A-Z. the problem is that when I do this, it actually changes the “Grouped By†default from categories – to a new group setting of “companyâ€. It should only be a sort going on, and should not be changing the “grouped by†defaults I have set up. Is this a problem in Outlook 2003 – or just on my machine for some reason?

AFAIK, the only actions you can perform on an individual category in that
view are those that appear in the Context menu when you R click on a
Category Header.

correct - when I right click the column header and then sort from A-Z, it does do the sort in that column. But there is a problem. My Outlook 2003 - which is brand new - is doing more than this. For example, first I have set up contacts to use the "category view". I did this by going to view, customize current view, group by - and setting that to "categories". Then, lets say that I have 3 categories called vendors, suppliers, customers, and lets say I have 4 contacts in each category. Now, my screen is showing me the "category view". I then expand one category to see the contacts listed in that category - lets say "vendors". The column headings are company, full name, files as, phone #. Now, I want to sort A-Z the contacts within vendors by "company". So, I right click on the "company" header and then sort A-Z. The problem is that the category view dissapears completely, and I am now looking at the "phone list" view (not the category view) - and it is sorted A-Z by "company". Again, the "category view" should not disappear. When I go to customize current view, and look at "group by" - I have set this up to be "categories". But when I do the sort described above, the sort actually changes the "group by" default that I set up to be categories, and replaces it with the column sort I did. In this example, it resets "group by" to "company". I really think it is a glitch in the software. my 2002 Outlook does not have this glitch... thank you for your help.

Try Shift+Click instead of Click on the column heading you want to group by.
This will *add* the new sort to the view rather than replacing the current
grouping.

thanks, that sort of helps on a one time basis. In Outlook 2002, I could
click at random any of the column headings and it stayed in Category view.
But in 2003, it actually removes the category view. I know this because I
can go back into view, customize view and the "grouped by" says none. I can
reset this to "category view", but as soon as I try another column sort, it
again resets the "grouped by" to none again. I believe the programmers
inadvertantly got this messed up. the "sort" should not be changing the
"grouped by" defaults. what do you think?
