Can't see XP-2k connection

I'm using a router to connect these two computers to the internet. Recently
I decided it was time to do the dreaded networking job of having them
interact with each other. I tend to run into roadblocks along the way but
I'm now stumped.

-Running Windows XP Pro and Windows 2000.
-No hardware firewall.
-Network Setup Disk cannot be ran on the win2k machine.
-In the command prompt," net use * \\192.168.1.102\food " is not working.
I've used it before between a Home and Pro computer to be able to access it.
Now, It comes back asking for id/pass, which any combination I could think of
does not work. Food is an empty folder created and shared.
-"Help and Support" provided no assistance.

Best I got it to was that on the 2k machine, I can see my Pro, there is an
icon for it. However, double clicking it promptly brings up an error dialog
box, "\\Pro Not accessible. The network path was not found."

Manual configuration for the network setup on the 2k didn't work out too
well. Found a page requiring me to have them both with Netbios over TCP/IP
enabled. No avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Create identical user accounts/passwords on each computer. If you are
currently using a blank password on either machine, assign a password.
On the XP Pro machine, make sure that Simple Sharing is disabled from
within Folder Options. Configure any software firewalls to allow the
lan as trusted. Use an IP range of 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254 if your
firewall settings allow that. Share out desired resources, making sure
that permissions are set to "everyone".

Alex,

Asymmetrical access / visibility problems like yours may involve the browser
(not the program that you surf the web from), and / or name resolution ("network
path was not found") symptoms. Start by checking for problems at each computer.

First, check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous, on each computer.
Misconfigured / overlooked firewalls:

Registry setting restrictanonymous:

If no help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as
a diagnostic aid. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely:

BTW, checking for NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is a good place to start. If that didn't
solve your problem, it's not the sole cause of your problem. But you do need
NBT on all computers, if all computers are to access each other reliably.
