I am having the same problem deleting some e-mails from my Deleted Items.
Were you successful in finding a work-a-round?

Nothing works including the treads I've looked at. I spend more time trying
to fix crap that MS needs to fix than working on projects that are getting
furthur behind. Then next thing is MS is going to tell me my email is full.
This is help? I think not.

From the subject, I assume that you have a message in the Inbox that you
can't delete.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection. Beside that,
McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and need to be
uninstalled.

The best thing to do is ignore them.

If you are not willing to just ignore them, the only way is to delete both
copies of the database (which does not contain the messages, but only
references to them) and let WinMail rebuild it.
First close WinMail, then use Task Manager to make sure there are no
instances of it under applications or processes.
Then click Start | Search | Advanced Search
Check the box to include non-indexed, hidden and system files.
In the Name field type WindowsMail.MSMessageStore and click the Search
button.
It should show you two copies. Delete both of them and re-open WinMail.
Note: some people report not being able to recover messages after doing
this.

BTW, Windows Mail will never tell yoiu your mail is full, although your mail
server might. But not because of messages in the Inbox on your machine with
as POP3 account.

Frank,

it showed me two copies but would only let me delete one of them. the other
one said this action could not be completed because the file is open in
another program

Sounds like you didn't follow the instructions to use Task Manager to close
WinMail on the Processes tab.

I would advise you not to proceed with that method because it
is likely to result in worse problems. Here is a quote from a
recent poster who used that method:

Gary...you are right! Now that I find I am no smart geek,,,any suggestions as
to how to rid the problem of recovered mail folders other than just deleting
them?(maybe trading my new computer for an older one with win98 or xp).
Thanks

So, be forewarned!

I don't understand what you are saying.
Did you read my response to the previous post, which you have
quoted below?

I've done it by clicking on the "Edit" menu and "Empty the deleted..."

And it worked fine; no error message this way...

You are quoting a very old message.
Please read the newer posts first.
The current method for resolving your issue is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090
"Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a
computer that is running Windows Vista"

Although Outbox is the only folder mentioned, it will remove stuck
messages from all folders.
