I have never lost any messages doing this. Of course, I looked in the
Recovered Messages folder before deleting it.

I figured it out!!!

1. Close Outlook.

2. Go to C:\users\youruserprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\
You can get the exact path using the following steps:
a. Tools > Options > Advanced > Maintenence
b. Click the "Store Folder" button
c. The exact path shows in an information popup.

3. Go to that folder and rename the file WindowsMail.MSMessageStore (don't
delete, just in case it doesn't work. I just put a "1" in the name.)

4. Restart Outlook (it will say "Rebuilding the database")

5. The problem file will still be there. Delete the file

WindowsMail.MSMessageStore has absolutely nothing to do with Outlook.

I have had to do this several times (only got my new computer on Friday and
today is Sunday!!!!!!!! Not so pleased.) After paying $130 to get all my data
transferred from my old computer, I was able to organize all my previously
saved e-mails.
Had to do this since the Mail screws up.
Now, 4 or 5 times later, they are all GONE!!!!
How do I get them back? That's hundreds of files, including all sorts of
pictures e-mailed to me and saved from people visiting my baby as a newborn
that I want to keep!

I don't use either McAfee or Norton.
I used Trend previously but can't get it to install here to even get the
upgrade to work w/ Vista.
Instead I got AVG malware per the rec of my local computer shop.

4 or 5 times though in one day to have to redo my e-mail? How much longer
will this keep going on? Aggh.

Windows Mail has many bugs.
The best solution is to replace Windows Mail with Windows Live Mail:

THANK YOU!
I have downloaded it and managed to find many, though unfortunately not all,
of my lost e-mails.
Hopefully this will be better.
Between the Windows Mail and my ISP who is having major server issues since
makign us switch to them from Earthlink mail, e-mail was getting to be a big
pain.
And every time Win Mail acted up, I had over 1300 emails coming in -- I own
an online biz and am taking online classes so am getting lots of emails
daily. Big pain.
Appreciate your help immensely!

Thanks for the feedback. I recommend you keep up with the posts
on the WLM newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop.
You'll pick up many tips and workarounds, and that will be the first
place where the availability of the next version of WLM will be
announced.

Hello,
I followed your instructions but when I went to delete both files, I was
only able to delete one. I received an error message for the second file
saying "The action can't be completed because the file is open in anther
program. Close file and try again."

I searched and could not find the file open. Please, help. I must not be
looking in the correct place.

Thanks,
db

That all worked well, except now I have edbres00002,edb.chk and edb icons on
my desktop that I cannot remove. there are two copies of edbres00002 showing.
also is there anyway of removing the recovered folders folder from view?

Unfortunately you've been hit by the side effects of deleting the
MSMessageStore files.
If you want to be done with all this shenanigans, just upgrade to WLM.

I can not delete an message in my inbox. a unknown error pops up, also a
message that states: Windows mail encountered an unexpected problem while
displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space
and try again. I have tried every possible way of clearing memory, nothing
works. I ran the email attacehment yesterday, it ran fine. I am also having
problems sending emails today. Any help.

The error message saying "low memory" is bogus.
It is the result of database corruption in Windows Mail.
The 'fixes' that are available for this problem are somewhat complex,
can have undesirable side effects, and do not produce lasting results.

A better solution is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail:
http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas

Note: A contributing factor to the WM database corruption
is the use of non-compatible antivirus programs.
If you are using either McAfee and Norton antivirus, it is
best to uninstall it and replace it with a more compatible
antivirus, such as the free version of Avast:
