Can't access desktop backgrounds

My desktop background picture disappeared. When I go the the desktop
properties it will not let me select a background. However if I reboot or
shutdown the PC the correct background will flash just before shutdown.

Does anyone know how to restore the correct background?

Thanks,

If you know for sure the computer is virus/malware free:

Go to the Display applet in Control Panel and look on the Desktop tab.
Click on Customize Desktop, and then click on the Web tab. You will see
that there are checkmarks next to "My Current Home Page" and probably
"Lock Desktop Items". Uncheck these. Click Apply and OK out when you've
made your changes.

If you can't enable desktop backgrounds after a virus, MVP Kelly Theriot
has a fix. Look under Wallpaper-Desktop-Disable Changing here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_w.htm

If Display tabs are missing, run Kelly's registry edit on line 285,
right-hand side "Restore all display tabs".

If you are unsure whether your computer is clean, see:

I have a similar problem , my daughter makes up designs from pictures of her
friends and everytime she sets it as background it stays there until we go
off, when the pc is switched back on , we log on and the picture is gone, it
is a just a coloured screen , when we try and change it back to the picture
it wont , if i use the windows backgrounds , it wont change until i restart,
then it shows up , if i log on to my sons screen his background is ok, and
any other photos we use are fine , only seems to be her own made up pics that
dont stay on after logging off, the picture shows up as being the background
on the small picture when you are in display- desktop backgrounds-and wehn i
cahnge it it shows as changed , but just doesnt come on desktop unitil we
restart, her picture name also disappears from the list when it is changed,
no other picture goes off the list when changed

Yes i did, i noticed when she made these "productions" as she calls them,
they were in a folder of same name, in her files folder, so i moved the one
she wanted as desktop to my documents/my pictures, and then set it again as
desktop background , now its fine , stays there till it gets changed, so i
told her to put all her ones she wants to use in that folder, i think this is
a folder that windows uses for background pics, hope this helps.

I have just encountered the same problem. My wallpaper has disappeared but
flashes just before shut down.
I have tried the Kellys Korner fix and the display applet idea in Control
panel but neither work.
This problem seems to have occuured after I System Restored to before
installing a free Microsoft accounting program and an Ashampoo magic unistall
program.
Hoping someone can help.

Problem fixed. Problem: Right click on desktop; Select properties; Select
Desktop tab; Browse for background; Select apply. Result: Background
appears on Display Properties screen but not on active desktop screen.
Select Apply. Background would not appear until reboot. FIX: Using
Customize Desktop; Web tab; deselect Lock desktop items; all is good. Hope
this helps others.
