Lost Desktop Background option due to Trojan.Desktophijack virus

My system was recently inflitrated with the Trojan.Desktophijack virus. I was
able to clense the system of the virus and return almost everything to
normal. However, I'm not able to set any new desktop backgrounds. I can't set
desktop backgrounds from an active picture. I don't get the option to set
desktop backgrounds when I right click on the background > properties. All
that shows up is the display (Screen Saver and Settings) options. Does anyone
know how to restore the desktop background option?

Go to this web site:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Download and run the registry edit on line 285, right hand side,
"Restore all display tabs".

Once you've got the Desktop tab restored, click on the "Customize
Desktop" button. Click on the Web tab. Delete any entries other
than "My Current Home Page".

Sounds like you may have to try a repair installation of Windows or try
System File Checker to see if the files can be repaired.

Nope. The damages are still present and you'll never know if there are
open backdoors unless you re-install from scratch.

Simple Registry Fix, System File Checker will find nothing wrong because
this is a policy option to Hide the Background Tab in Display
properties.

The only other thing I can think of to check would be the
following:

Go to Start -> Run and enter regedit.exe in the Open box.
Navigate to this location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

If there's an entry in the right hand pane for Wallpaper, right
click on it and select delete.

Good luck

You're welcome. Glad to hear that you got that problem fixed.

As you're probably aware, the kind of problem you experienced
is usually the result of some sort of pest that got on your
computer. Make sure you've run a scan with an updated antivirus
as well as an antispyware application, such as AdAware and
Spybot S & D. If you've already cleaned up your PC, great.
Hopefully you won't run into that sort of junk any time soon.

How were you able to clean up the desktophijack. I tried cleaning mine
through norton but lost my desktop and taskbar. When I restored them the
virus came back.

I'd also like to thank you nepatsfan. I also had to delete the entry for
WallpaperStyle in order to select Center/Tile

Would add to my notes, if I knew where they were, good work. Just a reply
from a Saints fan, the Colts are going all the way this year! Then for next
season, it will be Manning vs. Manning.

a) Registry fix-Automated :
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/wallpaperenable.reg

--- or ---

b) Manually (XP -Pro) :
1. Start > Run > gpedit.msc
2. Under User configuration > Click [Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Display\]
3. There will be a value named "Prevent changing wallpaper" > Set it to "Not
Configured"

--- or ---

c) Manually (XP -Any) :
1. Open Regedit
2.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
3. Double click the value named "NoChangingWallpaper" > Set it to 0
4.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
5. Repeat Step 3

If the above fails :

Good Luck, Ayush.
