Cannot start up.

I upgraded from Win 2000 to XP Pro. All went well and it
ran well until I defragged the drive. After defragging,
when I start up now, all I get is the problem
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and the info *** STOP: 0x000000ED
(0x81f694E0, 0xc000009c, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).
I've tried all the advanced startup modes to try and get
to the command prompt but it always goes back to the
problem screen with the above info on. The machine is a
Dell Inspiron P3 with CD-rom but no floppy drive. Any
help gratefully received. Many thanks.
