cannot play avi

I cannot get PP to play my .av
The screen will appear and the sound of the clip will play however there is a crosshatched area which doesn't display the video and at the top reads, "video not available. cannot find vids:mjpg decompressor
Please advise on how to get this to play. I have followed all the instructions on the help page. I have opened it in Windows media player and it plays fine. Ive tried to import it through the media clip from the media player and the same message appears. Thanks to anyone who may help

When you double click the .avi file, which program opens it? this may also help.
AVI or MPG doesn't work and links are "relative"

The codec, needed to decompress the file, is not installed on your system.

MJPG is something called Motion JPEG.
