Cannot enable cookies for cookinglight.com, and *some* other sites

T

Thomas G. Marshall

Version info: Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.040919-1003 (though I
have reverted back to SP1 months ago because of SP2 compatibility problems
with a *lot* of things). The IE version still shows the SP2 in it.
Whatever. Here's the issue:

When I go to www.cookinglight.com, I get the privacy no-can-do cookies icon
in the status bar.

I need cookies for this site, so I double click the icon, and say to always
allow cookies for this site.

F5 and it's still blocked.

I then get paranoid, so I go through every single link in the list, and
enable cookies for each one. There is only one other site listed as part of
this page: timeinc.com, so this is not needed.

And STILL cookies are disabled for this site. I hand check the list and
both domains are "always allow".

Now and then I'll get this behavior, which is driving me nuts. Does anyone
know what's going on?

be blocking cookies. If you have Zone Alarm, disable it and see if the
problem persists.

Also, if you have Yahoo or Google toolbars, disable them. If you have Yahoo

Most of these links are not appropriate: they don't refer to the /browser/
showing disabled cookies. For example, it doesn't matter even the slightest
little bit that there might be some other application blocking the cookies.
When I enable it within IE, then IE should show them enabled, and that's not
happening for some web sites.

Some of these links are appropriate though----I'll look into all of them
asap.

Thanks!

Hi Thomas :)

Have you tried checking your HOST file to see if it is blocking the site?
Have you checked to see if it is added it to your Trusted Sites?

It would also help if you could give us exact details and wording of the
error messages you are getting instead of references such as 'no can do'
with which we can do nothing but guess. You might also review the
information here.

Also, the fact that you say you 'reverted' back to SP1 does not explain
'how' you did so, and as your IE version still shows as SP2, it does seem to
indicate there is some question with IE as to what it truly is. Perhaps
that is why what it 'should' do and it 'is' doing is two different things at
this point.

Perhaps someone else here will be able to offer more expedient assistance.
Good luck. :)

Hi Thomas :)

The hosts file does /not matter/ here, since it is actually getting to the
site ok, and IE is identifying the site as cookie blocked, and I can't undo
it.

However, I *always* keep an icon on my desktop pointing to
c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts, modified for a direct invokation of
notepad, because it is one of the most common virus/hijack attacked files.

It would also help if you could give us exact details and wording of

There are no error messages. As I pointed out in my post, the
disallowed-cookies icon in the status bar remains set no matter what I do.
The fact that the web site itself is complaining about it is *secondary* to
the fact that IE cannot allow the cookies from its point of view. What else
could I have possibly given you for information that would matter?

Oh come on! I've been in usenet since 1994 and part of making a good
newsgroup post is to not top-post like you did!

I'm sorry, but I'm getting a little exasperated at this, and have lost
patience regarding supplying information that was already supplied and/or
fault-isolated away. I understand you're trying to help.
