Buffer Overrun Error

Guest

Hi,
I am using WindowsXP Pro SP2 and am having difficulty installing certain
programs. When ever I start the installation process I get the following
error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Buffer overrun detected!

Program: C:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's
internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must
now be terminated.

All helpfull ideas are appreciated.

Kind regards

David

David,

Temporarily turn off DEP if you are having trouble installing an app.

Right-click M Computer > select Properties > Advanced tab > click the
"Settings" button in the Performance section > Data Execution Prevent tab >
click the "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only
button"

If that is how it is set already though, try editing you hidden boot.ini
file instead:

/NoExecute=AlwaysOff

Save and reboot.

Here's some information on the subject, from the horse's mouth:

Thanks Stephen for the response, unfortunately however it didn't work - I
still have the same problem.

Another problem is running programs also. I have managed to install (with a
lot of agro) a piece of software and when I try to run it I have the same
error message except that instead of msiexec.exe causing the error the actual
program does.

I hav tried this both before and after the solution you suggested.

Kind regards
