Buffer Overrun Again.

Dave G

Within the last week I have suddenly started getting the following message
whilst trying to back up,copy or compile CDs.
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library.
Buffer Overrun Detected.
Program:C:\ProgramFiles\Nero\Nero7\Core\nero.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programmes
internal state. The programme cannot safely continue execution and will now
be terminated.

When I click on ok the programme just sits there and I have to close it down
manually. I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2 all up to date and AVG
Pro/Spybot in conjunction with Microsoft Firewall which has been my standard
for some years now. Has anyone any ideas how to solve this problem bearing in
mind I have uninstalled Nero twice via the programme but also manually and
via the register to no avail. No other programmes appear at this time to be
affected.
Any advise you could offer would be appreciated.

Really well hidden on the Nero website. I guess they want to keep whatever
they can of their programs on our computers. Download the Nero 7 Clean Tool
here:
http://www.nero.com/eng/support-nero7-tools-utilities.html
Click on "More details and download" and scroll down the page to find the
download. Unzip the file and run the .exe to remove the bloatware that Nero
is, then download the free CD Burner XP here:
http://cdburnerxp.se/download.php
to replace Nero.

I've collected this Nero 7 cleanup tool, and noted the URL of this
"cdburnerxp.se," (thanks for the details), ...agree that Nero 7 is very
bloated - hence one has to custom install it very carefully but, it does
what it does very reliably.

I'm wondering if the cdburnerxp.se program you reccommend can burn a
"film" dvd that will play in a domestic dvd player, i.e. after re-sizing |
authoring etc., and necessary *.vob | *.ifo | *.bup files etc, are all
present and correct - can it do it ? I have glanced through
"cdburnerxp.se" screenshots / URL and can't see any mention of it buring a
video dvd.

It seems Nero was giving users some problems after version Nero 6, and
Nero 7 seemed to have this problem frequently.

Of course, Nero 9 is the latest, so you have an old version and the
fix may be in the latest.

You can do a Google search for:

nero Buffer Overrun Detected

and find considerable discussion in the Nero community regarding this
issue and ideas for possible solutions (like using other free
software), upgrading, some registry edits, going back to Nero 5 or
Nero 6...

So, what you are seeing is nothing new and you may not be able to fix
it - especially with Nero 7, but there seem to be quite a few possible
"solutions" for you to research.

Richard I note your comments re Not Up To Date and presume you mean I should
be useing SP3!!! I have already tried this previously and to be honest even
before I had this problem when I installed SP3 my computer slowed down 30%
even though it was installed correctly. I have numerous friends who have
suffered with the same problem and all have had to Uninstall SP3 so for the
time been I will leave that alone.

Your choice as to what to do, but if you and your friends are seeing a
slowdown after SP3 installation, you are clearly doing something very
much wrong.

Thanks for the comments Ken but I doubt very much that some 15 people can
have got it all wrong and the majority on very fast brand new computers. As
you say that is personal choice and I don't think it has any relevance to the
present problem which it would appear is a Nero programme gone rogue like in
the bad old days when we had Zone Alarm 2.6 which wiped out many thousands of
computers as a lot of older people will remember.

I'll simply point out that your 15 people have had very different
experiences than the far more than that number running SP3 that I
know.

But I'm not trying to talk you into anything. Once again, what you do
is your choice.

Many thanks for reply Mark.
Have given the Nero Clean Up Tool a go but at this present time I have no
Burning Software on apart from Windows Media Player 11 and it would appear
that is now affected. I have just received three mails from my sister in
France two of which have WMV files to play but when I try to open/play them
they are coming up with no File Associated with them. I have checked in the
File Options and find that Nero Showtime has put itself in there so have
changed the associations to Windows Media Player as they were originally but
still coming up with the same report ie no file association even after a
system re-boot. This gets weirder. Any ideas.

Jose,
Many thanks for your suggestion, after spending some considerable time
searching the web as you suggested and compiling numerous ideas and
suggestion from a lot of people the best thing I can suggest is to just keep
useing the Nero Clean Tool 4 or 5 times and Dump Nero alltogether. I also
cleared out the registers manually and if anyone is trying this dont forget
that Nero has another name: Ahead Software so if you use the search facility
to see if you have cleared it all put this in as well as Nero!!!!!!. You may
also find that this problem produces other problems with Windows Media Player
and similar software but if you suffer this it seems, as in my case, that
Nero in its many incantations had decided to install itself as Codecs for
everything. You can of course resolve that by downloading the latest XP Codec
Pack and installing it. There does seem to be some very heated arguments as
to what in fact has caused this as on quite a lot of forums Security
Updates(The Old Favourite) are also blamed for causing conflicts. I don't
really know and I'm not into blame games all I want to do is have a computer
that does what it's supposed to do. Thanks to everyone who tried to help,
it's appreciated.
Keep Smiling, it scares the hell out of someone who thinks you know
something they don't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Regards. Dave G
