Buffer Overrun Problem

Hi,
I am using WindowsXP Pro SP2 and am having difficulty installing certain
programs. When ever I start the installation process I get the following
error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Buffer overrun detected!

Program: C:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's
internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must
now be terminated.

Another thing that has just come to light is when I try to run certain
programs after successfully installing them - I get the same error only with
the a different path and filename.

All helpfull ideas are appreciated.

Kind regards

David

My first thought is a very serious viral or trojan infection,
particularly since the Visual C runtime library "appears" to be involved
and the error refers to different executables and paths.

Go to www.broadbandreports.com, find the Security Faq and review the
Security Forum for a suggested method of handling a virus/trojan infection.
