AVG Free Edition--Auto Update

M

me

I have a friend who has only dial-up access to the 'Net. He is using
AVG free version (at my suggestion), but he's not too computer savvy
about doing the updates. So, I want to set up the auto update option
for him.

I've been experimenting with the setup on my system; but, from what I
gather, AVG will not actually dial a connection. There is an option on
the Scheduled Update Window which says "User Confirms Dial-up
Connection". I left that unchecked, assuming that would allow AVG to
dial without user intervention or help. BUT, I guess I assume wrong--it
doesn't work.

Anyone have any suggestions? All help appreciated VERY MUCH.

TIA,

Lakeside

1. Did you configure your firewall to permit AVG to access the internet?

2. How computer savvy do you have to be, to update your virus definitions
before doing a full virus scan?

If avg is installed in its normal path then you can make a shortcut
straight to the update option.Make a shortcut on his desktop or taskbar
and put in this path in target field.....

"C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6\AVGINET.EXE" /NORM"

If he clicks that it will auto update without him having to open control
centre etc.If you then set it to run minimised it wont even show on his
screen (except down by the taskbar till it updates)Also if he uses w98 he
could use a prog like net launch which can launch apps (including updates
using the shortcut update path i gave you ) on connection to net or up
too two minutes after connection. If he uses xp someone else may have an
idea that will automatically launch that update path on connection. You
could also set a full scan shortcut on his desktop which would be ...

"C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG6\AVGINET.EXE" /SCHED"
One click from the desktop will then start a complete scan.

George,

1. On the firewall--yes.

2. Well, if this guy had hair, he'd be a blonde! Does that tell you
anything? Seriously, I walk him through various operations (by phone)
and he really can't seem to remember from one time to the next. I've
just recently been able to get him to run a scan! Some folks got it,
some ain't!

Oh, BTW, did a search of Google Groups, for messages with "AVG", "Auto",
and "update" in the subject, and found a bunch of messages in various
news groups. The consensus among all those I read is that the auto
update feature does NOT work in the free edition--only in the paid, Pro
version.

OOps the scan path for complete scan should be avgw.exe NOT avginet.exe
,which is the updater of course,so just substitute that in the path.I
dont have avg installed any more but pretty sure it was avgw.exe ..try it
anyway to make sure and let me know.

Perhaps you should try the FREE edition of Avast Anti-Virus.
http://www.avast.com/i_idt_153.html . Some people in this group have
preferred it over AVG.
I believe that this program will permit automatic updates, and the ability
to schedule scans.

Please note that this isn't a reccommendation, as I have never used Avast.

They are wrong Jim! It is possible for AVG free addition to be set to
Automatically update (although I have tried this only from Win98 not
XP). As strictly, this is OT on this group, contact me off group and I
shall explain how it may easily be done, plus the reasons for NOT
doing so IMO.

Thank you for the heads up, George,

I've read a number of good posts about Avast, both in this NG and in the
Windows98 group. If my friend can't get it together with AVG, we'll
give Avast a try.

AVG auto update works just fine most of the time. I had a problem with auto
update and was going to give up but decided to take a different route.
I dumped the program then went to the site and downloaded a fresh version,
installed it with the new key (?) and then tried auto update and it worked
fine and has been working fine for some 3 months now. I assume it was caused
by a corrupted file. A friend of mine also has this problem and we solved it
the same way.
So, it works fine...YMMV

Hi task two;

T'was the simplest and best solution.
Not getting AVG to auto-update should ALWAYS send the user to the
http://www.grisoft.com SITE!!!
but it seems so easy to overlook that.

Perhaps that if you can't get the update in through the program, you
alweays can download the update from the Grisoft site manually???

I haven't been to the AVG site in awhile. I hope this isn't a sign of
going commercial only for these two:

"AVG and Kerio - Personal Security bundle with Antivirus and Firewall
Our new personal security bundle protects your computer from viruses
and from external intrusion. Learn more about protecting yourself with
AVG Anti-Virus and Kerio Firewall. Conveniently available at a special
low price when purchased together"

"AVG AVG and Kerio - Personal Security bundle with Antivirus and
Firewall AVG Professional Single Edition

AVG Professional Single Edition provides comprehensive antivirus
protection for personal computers. The unique combination of detection
methods (heuristic analysis, generic detection, scanning and integrity
checking) ensures that your computer receives the maximum protection
possible on multiple levels (Resident Shield, Email Scanner plugins,
Personal Email Scanner, On-Demand and other tests, etc.). Link to AVG
Single Professional product page.

Kerio Personal Firewall 4th
Kerio Personal Firewall helps users control how their computers
exchange data with other computers on the Internet or local network.

Kerio Personal Firewall is a necessity for all desktop computers
connected to broadband Internet, using DSL, cable, ISDN, WiFi or
satellite modems.

Within an organization, Kerio Personal Firewall prevents a single
computer from attacks initiated by internal users. Remote workstations
and laptops running KPF are protected from Internet born attacks. Link
to Kerio Personal Firewall product page."

Kerio 2.1.5 is great and AVG free is great!

Kerio 4 I don't like. I haven't tried the AVG commercial.

"Mikey"

What it means is that Mikey couldn't get the update thing to function...same
problem I had and many others also had as somewhere, something goes kafluie
(possibly a corrupted file) with AVG.
So, I simply recommended that he do what I and many others did...dump the
current version and go download it again with the new registration number
and it'll work just fine.

Hi Stoney,

Well, since they switched to these "microavi" files, I haven't had a
problem with their downloads, not on DUN and not on DSL. However they
built in a safe guard... you can ALWAYS download the update file from
their web server, copy it to the UPDATE folder, and then run the AVG
program (not the control center), the program will detect the update
and install it. That was what the poster meant to say.
