annoying advanced directory

AD doesn't mean Advanced Directory, it means Active Directory. It is not
annoying at all if you know how to work with it. Especially servers like to
have AD running.

Try to learn some more about AD, before you disable it from a server.

no, I dont want to work with it at all. If I cant find a way to disable it ,
Im going to switch that box to Linux/samba , just like I did with another
customer...

You probably do not even have it installed.

Just because you install Win2k, you then have to set up DNS and then run
dcpromo from the command line.

doaaahh!!!!!!!

active directory has it's strong points but, i would prolly switch to samba
(3.x) also if i had the opertunity. it is just better, at most things i
need to do.

AD and Smaba are not related. Samba is a way to get linux machines to view
Microsoft networks.

AD is a directory service for centrailzed security, policies and
administration.

Also, don't fear the unknown. The largest companies in the world use AD all
the way to small mom and pop shops.

You just have to be competant and understand DNS. If you do not know DNS,
then you will fail.

I cant add users for shares (from the domain list) since we are with W2k
Advanced Server. I see them , but I cant add them. I would have stick with
NT4.0 but the new tape backup we have doesnt have the drivers for Nt4.0...

Not because Microsoft is the McDonald of the OS that it makes it the best.
Wake up, Microsoft suck.

You installed it in the first place!!!!

Actually Phill, if you had read the thread you would have seen that it
is a client that is running this server-software. Nowhere does it state
that the OP actually installed it, and certainly not that the OP
reccomended it to the client...

Dave

uh my curtomer asked me to install it (it came with the Caopaq Server) and
like I said in a previous post, I dont have the drivers for the new tape
backup for NT 4.0 (they dont do anymore, same for the raid controller). Pay
attention Phil...

Dave

according to you answers, there is no way to disable it then ..

Going to Linux again, tx anyway

Poor customers :)
If you'll remove AD from the only DC, then you'll destroy MS domain, so you
definitely would need Linux box around (probably, that's what you want). Run
dcpromo from the CommandPrompt.
BTW, you wrote 'you dont know Linux and Samba. Samba can act just like a
DC'. Do YOU know linux or at least the terminology?

D

Dave

"If you'll remove AD from the only DC, then you'll destroy MS domain"

so its like I said, it cant be removed and act like a Nt 4.0 PDC ... You did
not understand what I wanted at all. I want w2k server to act like a plain
PDC , just like NT4.0 . I dont want to destroy the domain, where you get
that from ?

J

Jetro

Now you're speaking... You started the thread 'how to disable AD', and the
only meaning of it in Windows 2000 is 'uninstall AD'. If you want w2k server
to act like a plain PDC, just like NT4.0 - nada. Do you wanna ruin the whole
Microsoft W2k concept: or DC with AD, or member server? If your W2k domain
is still in mixed mode, you can demote it back to NT4 domain, but you need
NT4 server, indeed.
