NT4 server to join W2K Domain ?

J

Jim Matthews

We have just purchased another company and I would simply like to take their
NT4 Server and have it join our domain (W2K with AD)

Is this as easy as it sounds ?

Can someone tell me what steps I need to take ?

Thanks in advance

What role does this NT server have now? If it's currently a standalone or
member server, you can join it to the domain. If it's a DC, you have to
rebuild it.

You do know that NT is no longer supported, right? I'd just migrate the data
off it and build it as a W200* server if the hardware is new/good enough to
justify it.

Actually, all I want to do is copy all the data off of it to another server
and retire it

It is the only server in the domain, so it must be a DC

Isn't there a means of demoting it ?

Nope. Windows NT does not support demoting a domain controller, I'd suggest
that you migrate the data off it and onto a newer server.

Yep.

Nope. None supported, at any rate. And why bother? You don't need to join
the new domain just to copy data from it. Make sure you can reach it on the
network, map a drive to it, and use xcopy or robocopy or something to copy
the data over. Then the old server can go byebye.
