adding Windows NT 4 driver to Windows 2003 Printer Share.

I am attempting to add an additional driver to an already shared and
installed printer definition on a Windows 2003 server. The printer in
question is a Laserjet 5 and clients to support are Windows NT 4. I
have downloaded the most recent NT 4 driver from HP, but when attempting
to install it as an "Additional Driver" I get a message back that
"Windows cannot locate a suitable printer driver..."

When attempting to use the drivers in C:\Windows\inf, nothing happens
and the Windows NT driver is not installed. No message provided.

I assume this has something to do with kernal mode driver support and
stability of the printing sub-system.

Is my only option to manually install the driver at each client PC when
attaching to the share?

Thanks,
tM

I'm having the same trouble but only with some printers.

For the HP5 I have found that if I install the HP5 driver that ships with
W2k3 server then I am unable to add the NT4 driver but if I load the xp-2k
driver from the HP web site then I have no trouble loading the NT4 HP5
driver.

My method to resolving this problem for other printers is create a second
printer that is for NT users that has the kernel mode drivers installed or
to upgrade all existing NT4 workstations so the NT4 (version 2 or
kernel-mode) drivers are not needed.
