Activesync 4 problem syncing Office 2003, support code 85010014

I have installed Activesync 4.1 on my laptop, running Windows Media edition
and Office Basic 2003. Activesync will not syncronize my contacts, etc., with
an error message " Activesync has encountered a problem on the desktop,
support code 85010014". The connection to my Pocket PC (Windows Mobile 5)
works to explore and transfer files.

After furious head scratching, royboy asked:
