a unknown error has occurred

Hi Gary, I'm having the exact same problem as Rick. Surely the fix cannot be
to ignore the problem and do something else!
We have two other computers using the same versions of vista and windows
mail and they are still working properly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Please describe your own problem exactly in a new thread.

Tagging on to another users problem only confuses the issue.

Thank you.

Windows Mail is sensitive to interference from certain antivirus
programs. Therefore, email scanning in any antivirus must be
disabled, for reasons explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
do a trial uninstall of your antivirus. If no improvement, you can
always reinstall it. Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, consider
upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Note that Microsoft has essentially abandoned Windows Mail
since about July 2006, when they switched development to
Windows Live Mail .

I have the same problem. Windows mail just deleted all its mail boxes and
refuses to accept them being replaced. It shows the message "An error
occurred while reading the new account information. No changes have been
made."
Unable to fix this, I have downloaded Windows Live mail which also refuses
to accept new mail boxes and displays the same message.

This doesn't appear to be anything to do with the antivirus program as it is
not needed to configure the mail server.

I don't understand your comment "This doesn't appear to be anything
to do with the antivirus program as it is not needed to configure the
mail server. " How do you know what all your security software interferes
with? Please provide a list of all your third party security software.

What do you mean by "refuses to accept them as being replaced"?
Please elaborate.
Have you recently added new accounts to Windows Mail?
Is any existing mail account still working?
