30 seconds for IE to begin connection

I have an odd problem with IE. After I type a URL and press enter or click
on "Go", the windows icon in the top right corner is animated but IE just
sits for exactly 30 seconds. After that time the blue progress bar at the
bottom of the screen is displayed and the web page is retrieved.

I have used Spybot and Ad-Aware (nothing found but cookies), turned off
ZoneAlarm and Norton AntiVirus, but to no avail. I have cleared my cache and
history.

This is not a problem with other browsers, however, IE is my preferred
browser. Pings to a site my PC has never been to do not suffer from this 30
second delay.

Also - when I look in Network Connections, nothing is listed. But when I do
an IPCONFIG, my "Cox" connection is displayed. I normally can see this
connection in Network Connections. I've rebooted but this problem is not
corrected.

Thanks for any tips and help!

Found my own solution, although it doesn't make sense. Uninstalled ZoneAlarm
in Safe Mode, and the problem was solved. Odd, but I'm happy :)

Great point. I'm using Windows Firewall, in addition to a hardware firewall.

Does your hardware firewall have any diagnostics in it?
If so, use them to determine what the first request is,
when it is, what the response is and when it is.

Your symptom is a classic symptom of a searchbar hijacking (aka spyware).
E.g. your system is infected by a "search service" but the server for that
service is either not available or very slow in responding. Typically what
they might do is figure out that your (unprefixed) input was really meant to be
a partial URL and then forward that on to where you intended. I'm not sure
what the mechanism would be on the client side which would cause
a non-response to be converted into the proper request. Perhaps that
would be another feature of the (hidden) search bar.

Thanks. It does, but nothing that has helped me diagnose the problem. It
just shows the connection being made as IE calls for it. The delay seems to
be in IE.

I agree on the browser hijack, but couldn't find anything with Spyware,
Ad-Aware, or MSFT's tool. Finally restored my C: drive from a prior backup
and things were resolve. So while I can't say what the problem was, I'm back
in business.

Thanks for your tips - much appreciated!
