Zone Alarm

Read this site regularly. Often have seen recommendations for using
ZoneAlarm instead of Windows Firewall.

Dowloadeed ZA; it was larger than AV I was using. However, when studying ZA
instructions, etc., I began to get the feeling that ZA does not include
anti-virus.
Is this correct? Thank you for your patience with such an elementary
question.

Your conclusion is correct. Zone Alarm is a software based firewall (vs a
hardware firewall) only. Antivirus protection is a separate application to
be installed and maintained.

Correct - they're different tools for different types of threats.

Yes and no, actually. The free ZoneAlarm is just the firewall. If you
purchase the ZoneAlarm Security Suite, that includes the firewall and
AV and anti-spam. I find the suite to work pretty well.

ZoneAlarm itself is a firewall program, not an anti-virus. I'm not
sure what you mean by "I began to get the feeling..."; did you expect
something else of it? Why?

However note that they also sell a ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite,
which *does* include an anti-virus program.

Personally, I use the ZoneAlarm firewall, but not the security suite.
I am almost never interested in software suites of any kind, whether
security, office, or anything else. I prefer to make my own choices of
which is the best product in each category, and not accept what the
vendor has cobbled together.

By the way, I note that you say "Read this site regularly" Note, that
this is not really a site. It's a newsgroup. You are using the awful
web-based interface to participate in this newsgroup, and that's the
slowest, clunkiest, most error-prone method there is. Do yourself a
favor and switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes
with Windows. See

Dear Mr. Blake:

What I meant by "I have the feeling" is that as I studied ZA help, options,
screens, etc., it became apparent that it was firewall with no AV included.
And the others ave confirmed this opinion for me.

So sorry you don't like my approach to this newsgroup. However, I will
continue to "lurk" because I learn so much here. Please do not trouble
yourself to answer any future inquiries from me.

Whether I like your approach or not is irrelevant. I tried to give you
information and to make a suggestion that I thought would be helpful
to *you*. Feel free to accept or reject any suggestion I make.

In a spirit of reconciliation, I'll also point out that in an effort
to save time, my newsgroup postings, like those of many of us here,
are often brief and to the point. They may sometimes seem curt or rude
to the reader, but they are hardly ever meant that way. In this case,
my message was certainly not meant to be insulting, and if you took it
that way, my apologies.

I doubt very much that Ken Blake intended to insult or frustrate you. Many
of the busiest posters here respond to more questions than you or I would
likely ever even consider doing, and to save a little time and get to the
most people, they may answer in what seems a curt or sometimes even rude
manner, but it's seldom the case with people like Ken.

I hope you DO continue to lurk, and maybe even jump in once in awhile when
you're certain you can help someone or have another question; there are
several very knowledgeable people volunteering to help folks like you and I
on this group. There are also some dunderheads and the occasional troll,
but lurking lets you get pretty used to who is who.

Cheers,

Pop`
