Since upgrading zoneAlarm to ver 5.0 i can no longer get WS_ftp pro to
connect. I installed a trial of Cute ftp and the same with that
I have to close down zone alarm to get ftp to connect.I have tried
every setting i can in zone alarm and am now stuck
Anyone have any solution i would be grateful for any info
otherwise I may have to dump zone alarm or go back to ver 4.5

ZA 5.0 would appear to be a genuine case of "DumpWare" - after
upgrading, users generally dump the product and move elsewhere.

Allegedly.

I know I did.

Do you have the Windows Firewall enabled as well?

Try sygate personal firewall (free)....
You can then look at the logs to see what is being blocked, and make up
special rules accordingly.

here's an idea: did you try "passive mode" as opposed to "active mode" in
the FTP program?

I use SmartFTP on ZAF 5.1.011 in "passive mode" and have no problems on XP
SP2.

Yes, go into the settings and make sure FTP is enabled. This has been a
problem for ages, because of the one of the FTP modes. E.g. on long
downloads, certain hardware firewalls will time out.

The problem with switching modes, is that not all sites support both.

I get the same problem, frequently, and also have to deal with various hosts
between passive and active. On my system I can get a (cuteftp) close. If I'm
doing a lot of updates I now switch off zonealarm and re-start afterwards. I
still leave the xp firewall on and am behind a NAT router so probably not an
issue. Never seem to have had any conflicts between ICF and ZA though,
strange that!

I declined updating zone alarm to 5 some time agoand will stay with 4.9...
