Is there anyway to use zipped folders in order to FTP files to remote
website?

Susan

Not if you are thinking that you can FTP the zip file to the server, then open it and extract the
web content.

That is what I thought! I was trying to figure out how to transfer large pdf
file for link to remote website.
Guess zipped folders won't work! Darn!

Thanks,
Susan

you can still zip the PDF and link to the zip file for easier downloads for your
visitors, if the PDF is really that large.

T,
I was looking at hosts for someone last week, and remember seeing a feature about online host unzipping feature thingie...at least I thought thats what they were saying...maybe there is a server unzipping utility out there????

Well I had to try it. I linked to the zip folder and got the message DNS
error. Then I deleted the zip folder and got the typical hosting company
page when page does not exist.
Guess zip folder can't be unzipped. It worked locally but guess that is
because I have XP pro and unzipping works. Oh well, I have fun learning what
happens.

I think you misunderstood.

Originally you wanted to zip the PDF then upload the Zip file and uncompress it
on the server, you were advised you couldn't do this.

I suggested to link to the zip folder (with the PDF within in) and let users
download that zip folder, then unzip the PDF file on their machine.

But I didn't mean Zip the already Zipped folder containing the PDF.

I did not misunderstand! I just don't know how you link to a zipped folder
and have the user able to download the zipped folder. I know how to attach a
zipped folder in an email. How does the application "know" you want to
download it and not open it?

All Zipped folders will automatically want to download - not open.

Import the zipped file into your web.
Create a hyperlink to it just like you would if it were another web page.
When a visitor clicks the link, the mime type settings in the browser, in combination with the fact
that the computer has to launch the WinZip application to open the file, tell the browser it has to
download the file.

In other words it's automatic.

I appreciate your feedback. I have determined that I have a bad connection
to the Internet. I would try things and things would not work! I thought I
was not doing things right ! For instance, I managed to get a zipped folder
out to the website. My husband at work can download it and open it fine. If
I try it at home, it downloads and I cannot open it without getting error
that it is a corrupted file. I deeply appreciate all who have given me
feedback because without your feedback, I would have given up on using the
Internet a long time ago.
