Kate

(Windows XP Home SP3)

When I right-click Desktop or within an open folder and >New, there is
no Compressed (zipped) folder option. How do I enable this facility,
please?

Many thanks

Check under the "Send to" option, that where my compressed folder option is.

Ah hah! Although the MS instructions tell me to right-click on an
empty area of the Desktop or in an open folder, the zip and Send to
options only appear if I right-click *on* a folder or file. I should
be able to get that to work, so thanks muchly.

Hi Kate,

Click Start, Run. Type the following command and press {ENTER}

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

Then run the following command:

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

I ran a test zip on a folder of .tiffs which were already LZW
compressed and the results were disappointing; the folder size was
187MB and, after zipping, it was 182MB, which is a very small
space-saver. The archiving app installed on my computer is Power
Archiver, which is what opened when I clicked Compress to Zip. I also
tried running the command you suggested, Ramesh, and a message box
popped up saying "DllUnregisterServer in zipfldr.dll succeeded" and
that was it! I ran it while writing this post and was expecting a
utility to open so that I could add files. Can you tell me what the
message means, please? Have I now compressed this post, and, if so,
where has it been saved to?
Many thanks
Kate

Compressing already compressed files will never gain you much if anything.

Why don't you just open and use Power Archiver? If you want shell
extentions (right click menus) you can enable them in PA's
Options>Configuration and select just the ones you want to appear.

It was Power Archiver that gave me such a small saving, so I was
hoping that Windows zip utility would do better. I guessed that
archiving already-compressed files wouldn`t achieve much, but hadn`t
realised how little it would be.

Thanks for the replies.

Ran the 2nd command, Kate. That restores the "Compressed (zipped) Folder" to
the New menu.

Sorry, Ramesh, I missed the second one. I will try it, but as you
will see from my post, zipping already-compressed files doesn`t give
enough savings to make it really worthwhile. Thanks for taking the
time and trouble of replying, though.

That's correct, Kate. My response was only about bringing back the
"Compressed (zipped) Folder" option to the New menu.
