ZA 6.0

L

Lil' Dave

The latest version of ZA/ZA Pro is for XP/2K only. CAUTION. Here is an
excerpt from the Zonelabs header in the forum for 6.0 version:

Welcome to the Zone Labs User Forum

Zone Labs is aware that a small percentage of our existing customers are
having issues with the upgrade to ZoneAlarm 6.0, and is working hard to fix
the situation.

The cause appears to be related to the upgrade process, not the application
itself. Therefore, we recommend users experiencing difficulties uninstall
any prior version of ZoneAlarm (v.2.x - v.5.x) residing on their computer
system and do a clean installation of their new ZoneAlarm 6.0 product.

We sincerely apologize to any customers affected and appreciate your
patience.

yeah well, I installed ZA 6 on Win Me and now it takes 3 boots to get the
computer running. I just considered (before reading this post) uninstalling ZA 6
and going back to ZA 5.5 or whatever it was. What should I do?

Uninstall ZA 6 per instructions on their tech support site. Do not just
use Add/Remove Programs. Sygate Firewall works on ME machines. Kerio
offers another free version - check system requirements first.

Symantec buys Sygate
No unsafe romping at network edges

Symantec, maker of the popular Norton series of anti-virus, security and
computer management tools, announced today that it had acquired security
start-up Sygate for an undisclosed sum it will pay in cash.

Sygate makes "end point" tools that make certain all devices connecting to a
network are compliant with administrator policies before access is granted.

That can close off one of the most critical vectors for malware -- the
introduction of infected devices to a pristine network.

RedHerring compares Sygate's offer to the work of a customs and immigration
agent at the border, saying "it ensures a computer has all its vaccinations
before being allowed into the corporate network."

Symantec expects to take on around 200 members of Fremont, Calif.-based Sygate
as part of the deal, Symantec spokeswoman Genevieve Haldeman told MarketWatch.

MarketWatch estimated privately held Sygate's sales at approximately $US15
million in 2003 -- and RedHerring noted that Symantec typically pays six to
eight times the acquisition target's revenue.

One of Sygate's principal investors, Trident Capital, said the settlement was
"very attractive."

"It is critical to have an endpoint compliance solution that will allow
companies to leverage their existing IT infrastructure to control the myriad
devices connecting to the network," said Enrique Salem, senior vice president,
security products and solutions at Symantec.

"A recognised leader in endpoint compliance, Sygate provides the first universal
network access control system designed to protect the entire enterprise
network - from mobile devices to servers to unmanaged devices. The fact that
their technology is built on industry standards means that companies don't have
to implement expensive infrastructure changes to deploy this solution."

That is what a lot of people seem to be doing by reading the ZA Forum.
This whole mess smells of the same fiasco they had with version 5.0

To "REALLY" uninstall ZA, don't use window's uninstall utility, do the
following:

Click on Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs. RIGHT-click on Uninstall Zone
Labs Security, then select Properties. Under Target you will see the
following line (the actual drive may be different on your system):

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe"

Change it to:

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean

(add a space and then the /clean).

Click OK to save the new command line. Click on Start -> Programs ->
Zone Labs -> Uninstall Zone Labs Security. Click OK to run the
uninstaller, and OK any security alerts that pop up. Say "Yes when
being prompted for the removal of all files. This will get rid of
ZoneAlarm for you. Now go to your C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder and delete
everything with the name ZLT* (ZLT followed by anything). Do not
delete files unless they are Zone Labs files. Then find the folder
named C:\WINDOWS\ Internet Logs. RIGHT-click and delete the whole
folder. For Windows XP: clean your C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch folder. Clean
the history in Internet Explorer or your current browser, clean the
cookies. Then empty your recycle bin. ZoneAlarm should be gone.

Nice way to spin the fact that a "Lot" of people are having issues
with 6.0 just like a "lot" had issues with 5.0 which ZoneLabs had to
finally fess up to after trying to spin it away.

Last stable versions were the 4.5 and 5.5 series. I went back to 5.5
and everything cleared right up. Anyway, their track record shows you
that when the brains at ZoneLabs come out with an x.0 version, avoid
it like the plague and wait for the x.5 update. So I'm waiting for
6.5 before touching that thing again.

Regards,
Ed

Thanks Ed for the instructions. I've just printed them up and I hope they work.

Kerio's free download is not for Win Me or 98SE as far as I can see just yet.
