You've never seen this one before...

I am trying to solve my dad's problem. For some reason when he puts a disk
in either of his two dvd burners the disk no longer runs... This can be an
installation disk or media disk. Further when I go into "My Computer" and
click on his disk drive it says please insert a disk even though there is one
in there. Now here is the weird part... if I then open windows media player
and close it, then go back to "My Computer" it will then open the disk as if
there was never a problem. So.. why do I need to open media player in order
to get XP to run installation disks, or music cds??? I have gone into device
manager, updated drivers and even uninstalled the drives, re-booted and then
windows still does the same problem with reading disks. Media player has to
be open before a disk can be read. He has been messing with Roxio, Pinaclle,
and nero.

Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider On the
Edit menu, click Permissions . Click the registry key for the user that is
currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control are both set to
Allow . Click the Advanced button, ensure that the user that is currently
logged on is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column,
and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column. Click to
select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown
here that apply to child objects check box. Click Apply , and then click Yes
when you receive a prompt to continue. Click OK , and then click OK again

Install, run and under My Computer/Auto Play/Drives you will find check
boxes to enable/disable Autoplay.

If non of the above fix the problem, then there is the 'Autoplay Repair
Wizard'

Everything is as you said. Full access so nothing to change of the items you
listed. Still not reading disks unless I open media player first...

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortionalty no luck with a fix. However...
When I tried the autofix it had errors for each of my two drives. However it
was unable to repair the errors. I will try to attach a log file that was
given..

Is it possible that it is one of the MS pacthes that has caused this problem?
