Your Favorite Freeware Websites? (including little-known websites)

B

Berkeley Brett

Hello all:

I know that many of the software-savvy contributors to this fine
newsgroup are frequent downloaders of freeware, and I suspect that many
enjoy "panning for freeware gold" from time to time: looking for
little-known freeware masterpieces that can vastly enhance the quality
of ones computing experience.

Whoever said "You can't get something for nothing" had not explored the
world of freeware!

My question is, which websites are your favorite freeware websites?
There is no need to be restricted to freeware-only websites (for
example, www.Download.com has lots of excellent freeware, though
freeware comprises only a small percentage of their offerings). I'm
simply wondering, which websites do you *actually* explore on a pretty
regular basis to find the best freeware available?

Please feel free to include little-known freeware sites as well as the
large, very well-known websites. And please don't worry about
repeating sites that others mention: it would actually be quite nice to
see which sites are mentioned most frequently. Repetition encouraged!

Thank you in advance for your help!

As far as my own favorite sites, I really do think that
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ is just about the best freeware-only
website around (assuming you are looking for practical freeware and not
entertainment freeware). I recommend this website to friends before I
recommend my own website! I also think that http://www.download.com/
is hard to beat for the absolute breadth of its offerings, though the
trick is being able to find the truly free software that is available
at this site. (There is no foolproof way to sift out the freeware at
download.com , though my own website http://www.FreewareFriend.com/
provides a way to explore download.com that filters out *almost* all of
the for-pay software.)

Websites that include entertainment freeware are also most welcome!
(Games, music, art freeware, etc.)

Thanks again for your thoughts and contributions!

Thank you, Daniel, for this extensive list! I do see quite a number
that are unknown to me.

How much trouble would it be for you to provide clickable links?

If it's not too much trouble, it certainly would be appreciated!

Thanks again.

I love http://www.Snapfiles.com/ because they have separated the
freeware from the shareware. http://www.NoNags.com/ is also pretty
good. And the freeware thread on Neowin.net has been a great resource
as well.
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=320017

I've considered signing up for http://www.completelyfreesoftware.com/
which, while a subscription site, has a lot of stuff that I've not
found anywhere else. It used to be free to access the site, but it has
been subscription based for a while. I just have trouble with the idea
of "paying" to access freeware.

I used to visit http://www.FreewareHome.com a lot, but as others have
mentioned here, it has really gone downhill lately.

I've not had much luck at Download.com because developers have to pay
to list their software on the site. Many freeware developers don't want
to do that.

Hi Daniel:

Thank you for this extensive list! Several of these are unknown to me.

Would it be much trouble to provide clickable links? Some of these are
probably quite worth clicking!

Thanks again.
