Yes, another Windows Explorer problem

When I use Windows Explorer to try and open files that are associated
with Office applications...it hangs. Word docs open after about 90 sec
but Excel files never open but Exce itselfl starts, again after about
90 sec.PDF and other files open OK. Directly opening office apps from
direct shortcuts still works OK. Embedded links to Office docs have
also stopped working, such as attachments to e-mails. Hyperlinks are
behaving the same as the Office doc links.

It doesn't seem to be a context window issue, either, since the
context window links behave the same as directly double clicking a
file to open it.

I did an Office Repair...Office Pro 2003... and ran spybot,
ad-aware, HiJackThis and a complete virus scan with Norton, but it
did not fix things. Don't know if this is an office issue or an
explorer issue and if this is even the right forum.

Unlike another poster, my explorer does not grab all the processor
cpu's...it just is not acting normally...this is a three day old
series of events so whatever happened just happened..and nothing
unusual occurred.

Any thoughts??

An Office newsgroup is more specialized. I'm sure I've seen this
answered before there.

Also, is it local HDD files, networked files or ALL Office files.

Any Office document or spreadsheet on local and network machines hang
before opening. And, no, this has not been addressed specifically.
Similar but not the same...this hanging is different because it
finally works after about 90 sec delays...and it does not crash or hog
resources.

My question posted in the Office forum has gotten no responses.

Only thing to try is something related, which is fixing the context
menu drivers...which seem to be working OK...except that the OPEN With
menu item still causes the same hang as does a direct double click on
the item. The file type associations are also OK.

On another networked machine, these documents can be accessed with no
hangs...so documents are OK. The problem is in the one machine and it
is either a ding in the explorer.exe file or something relationtional
with regard to Office...and an Office repair did not work. Now for the
context menu fix...long shot since those symptoms are not the same.

Are the files being scanned for viruses before opening?

Yes, but only after the Office apps have opened after about 90
seconds. It is not a consistent thing, either. I turn Norton off and
it does not help.

Just ran a test on Office documents and the problem has gone away. Now
what is that all about??? After everything I tired and nothing works,
I left things alone for a couple of days and ...Hello, I'm Back and
Ready to Work like always!!!!!

This stuff is infuriating.

Thanks for inquiring.

Oh, how do you replace explorer.exe...since you need to use it to
replace it and you can't replace or change files in use. If
Explorer.exe were the problem and I wanted to check out if it were
currupted, how do you do that??

I can only guess.
I don't know if it can be replaced without doing a reinstall or a repair
install.

I did a Google Groups check and there were 44000 hits on "Office
documents slow to open", and my eyeballing indicated a good few that
seemed the same as yours. Usually NAV Office Plugin is to blame.
