Explorer slow

Hi all

I don't know where to go with my problem. May be somebody of you could help
me:

Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer is actually really slow. Last week it
was all ok. I try to describe the problem:

If i try to Copy (CTRL C) any file, the sandbox comes up and Explorer is
blocked for circa 65 seconds (stopped the time).
If i try to open the Context-Menu of a file, the sandbox comes up and
Explorer is blocked for circa 65 seconds.
If i try to open a Web Page with Internet Explorer and it looks as it is
finished ("Done" is the status), just sometimes, it then still have to wait
another ca. 30 seconds till the Window is enabled (you can't click any
button).

I checked for the last installed Software but it was 2 weeks ago and last
week it worked all fine. Additionally i deleted all the Network-Links out of
Explorer, but with no success.

Is there somebody out there that knows the problem and/or knows a solution
for this or what i could check...

Thank you!

kaiserlich,

Do you have any restore points from last week? Tough to diagnose these types
of problems.

A bit more info might help. For example do you disfragment your disk on a
regular basis? Do you run any antispyware such as AdAware by Lavasoft (free
and effective)?

In order to avoid any possible malware in the future you might also update
your HOST file. This site is very helpful

Hi there

I scanned my system with Symantec Antivirus, Spy Sweeper, Ad-aware, Spyware
Doctor - and they found nothing on my system.

I try to describe the problem a little bit more:
The biggest problem i have is with "Windows Explorer", the Internet Explorer
doesn't work so bad, i don't have to wait that long. Any other Software is
working well, and as well Windows XP is working good.

I descibe it a little bit more:

NOT OK:
Delete, Copy (with CTRL C), Start Programs and Right-Click on a File always
takes in minimum 60 seconds.

OK:
Move files with the Mouse is all right and fast.
Right Click on a Folder is working fast.
Open Programs with a Shortcut (not in Windows Explorer) is working fast.

I was looking into the Task Manager to see when i try to delete a 1 kb file
from Windows Explorer what happens: nothing. No CPU Usage of any process
(only System Idle Process and taskmgr.exe). And just right at the end
explorer.exe shows doing something for a second.

Something suspicious that i detected was that last week i had "TextPad" in
the Context-Menu (with right-click on a file). And now not anymore. After 65
seconds of waiting for the Context-Menu the entry for the Textpad is not
there anymore. Where can i see the settings respectively the Programs (like
Winzip) that are shown in the Context-Menu? Is there a registry key or
something like that available?

I'm still running other Spyware remover tools, may be one of them will find
something, but as i wrote - till now without any success.

Thank you for your help!

kaiserlich,

Open Task Manager > Processes. When you select Copy (with CTRL C), does the
CPU show 100%. If so, which process?
Also, any errors or warnings in the Event Viewer?

I checked the Eventlog - but there are no special or new problems. And as i
wrote, nothing happens: only taskmanager and System Idle are using CPU time.
I did it now many times to see if there are other unknown processes in touch
with the Copy or Delete action, but nothing.

For me it looks like Explorer is getting a Timeout, but i don't know why or
what windows explorer is searching / waiting for. And after this 65 seconds
he copies or deletes it successfully.

What other Information i could share / check?

Hi all

I could solve the problem!

With the tool http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html i could look into
the system what entries there are for the Context Menu - and it was Textpad!
The entry was wrong. Instead of targeting to the local machine, it was
targeting to to the firewall. I don't know why this could happend. But at
least i found the problem. The tipp came out with searching a little bit more
in this forum, and the Website http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm

It means for me that when i delete or copy anything in Explorer, Windows is
using the Context-Menu Handler. Why this could cause that Internet Explorer
was slow, i really don't know... Now its all good again.

It's really the best place to find a solution - thanks Newsgroup!

Cheers
