I just built a PC using the same motherboard. The ATI IDE controller has
"quirks" nobody seems to know about, or are willing to address.
(Is your Yamaha a white faceplate, blue/purple LED, and 44x CDRW?)
It sounds like the bug I found. I tried using one of these as master. Booted
to XP Pro SP1CD,fresh loaded XP all the way thru, then on the last final
boot, XP would hang at the splash screen.
I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why. Disabled the CDRW in
BIOS, and XP booted!!! Figure that one out. Put in another drive as master,
no problems. Install this Yahama as slave, windows will hang at splash
screen. I have been using this Yahama drive for over a year, and it still
works - just not in THIS motherboard.
Another ATI IDE bug. Software that works with XP Pro (SP1, or SP1a) on my
other motherboards, wont on this one. PowerDVD 4.0 was the first, even with
the Hyperthreading patch. Then InterVideo DVD Copy, wont recognize my DVD
burner as a burner. But the same drive works in other PC's I have, with the
same DVDCopy, and XP Pro (SP1, or SP1a). Go figure.
At least NERO 5 still see's my DVD +/- drive as a burner.
Sometimes, windows will change the drive icon in "My Computer' to a DVD-ROM.
And then even Nero wont give me the DVD burning options, until I reboot.
(This is NOT a drive issue, I have tried swapping out 3 other working DVD
+/- drives, same results)
Of course I never heard of these things when I was looking to buy this
motherboard. It has been a real troubleshooting experience. Bugs I never
heard of before.
And let me know if you *EVER* see ATI Busmaster IDE drivers. It seems
strange, that is the only driver missing (they never made one - even though
they designed their own IDE controller on the 9100IGP). Intel has their INF
setup driver, AMD has their 4in1 Hyperion drivers, all that properly set up
the IDE functions. ATI doesnt.
