slave CD-RW can't read disks

I have installed a Sony dvd-rw (DW-U18A0 as master with a goldstar cd-rw
(CED-8120B) as the slave.I HAVE CHECKED THE LINKS AND THE IDE CABLE IS
CONNECTED WITH THE LAST CONNECTOR PLUGGED INTO THE MASTER BUT THE SLAVE
DOESN'T READ DISKS.
PLEASE HELP.

What are the two drives "jumpers" set to??

Both need to have the correct Master / Slave pins used.

Have you tested setting the Goldstar CD-RW as master??

Does the CD-RW read standard CDs (not a CDR or CD-RW)?
 
tried cd-rw as master no good.
will not read any type of disk

Have you tried just using the CD-RW drive by itself? If the drive
still does not work when it is the only drive, then the drive has
"died." It is too expensive to repair older drives that it is to
replace it.
