Hello
Should I really set the DVD rom as master and the CD/RW as slave on the
secondary IDE channel? Yamaha, the CD/RW drive producer, recommended to set
the drive as master. The problem is with the CD/RW drive, not DVD. A DVD
playback sticks sometimes only if I use "Hardware Decode Acceleration".

Generally you want to set a read/write device as master and a read only
device as slave. The bottom line though is there is not hard and fast
technical rule on that and there can be arguments made for either way.
The ATAPI spec does not cover that as far as I have seen.

Thanks.
There's a delay in DVD playback beginning because WinDVD addresses CD/RW
drive first when checking or unchecking "use Hardware Decode Acceleration"
or changing some other options.

My recommendation:

Always set the drive you use the most as master.

That is to say:

If you burn a lot of CD-R/RW, then the CD-RW unit should be the
Master drive.

or

If you play a lot of CD/DVD, then the DVD unit should be the
Master.

Also, make sure that the IDE cable that you are using is an UltraDMA 80
pins cable. This is the best cable for the higher processing required and
is also backward compatible with non-DMA IDE ports.

What would you say about this reply: "Hi,

It (an 80 wire cable) should be used with an ATA66 or higher drive, but may
cause problems on slower drives/CD drives.

Whoever told you that was probably trying to sell you the rest of his/her 40
wire cables so that he/she could make a profit while ensuring their own
system would only be outfitted with 80 wire cables.

Hello
Then, how to prevent BSOD "Kernel_data_inpage_Error Stop: 0x0000007A

base at f98c1000 dateStamp 3d6de5c1"? Then, after pushing the restart button
'Primary disks failed' message appears. The message doesn't appear after
turning on power on the system block. The BSODs appear at a CD recording
using Easy CD creator latest version 5.3.10. The CD writer is secondary
master.

Memorex agrees.

My Memorex 52MAXX 2452AJ 52x-24x-52x CD-RW Drive says

The CD-RW Drive MUST BE connected to the SECONDARY Channel as the
Master device.

I never saw that note so I've been running the burner as the Secondary
Slave all this time (13 months) under Windows 98se and then Windows
2000 Professional with no apparent problems. Maybe it would run faster
if set to Secondary Master? No coasters burned using Roxio 5.0 Basic.

Prior to this drive I used the Sony CRX140E 8x-4x-32x set up the same
way in my main computer and then in my secondary computer after I got
the faster drive. No problems with this drive in either computer when
used as Secondary Slave. Can't find the manual for it.

"No coasters burned using Roxio 5.0 Basic" because your drive probably has a
buffer under run prevention technology. My drive doesn't have.
