Can't read CD via Windows explorer but all tests OK via Admin Tool

G

Guest

attempted to replace the slave hard drive on my primary IDE with another
drive that proved to be unformatted (perhaps corrupted by VCOM Copy
Commander). When this failed, I formatted the slave hard drive using Windows
XP, which then allowed me to add the drive to my system. I thought all was
well, but since this event (coincidence?) I can no longer open media that are
in my CD-R/RW or DVD drive if I attempt to do so using Windows XP explorer.
All drives appear in My Computer, and the CD-R/RW and DVD icons update when I
add a disk to them, but if I right-click and try to open the CD or DVD, they
appear empty, or I get a "no disk" message. Sometimes the CD-R/RW will
behave as though I put a blank CD into it, even though the CD is formatted
and contains data. If I access the CD-R/RW or DVD drive via Windows
Administrative Tools (Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management), both the
CD-R/RW and DVD drives function normally (they will both autorun and/or open)
through Admin Tools. Also note that I swapped-out the CD-R/RW with a simple
CD, and it also failed when I tried to access media on it. I also removed
the slave hard drive, and replaced it with the CD-R/RW as slave on the
Primary IDE, and unplugged the cable from the Seondary IDE...this did not
resolve the problem; same symptoms with the CD-R/RW. Both the CD-R/RW and
DVD drives are on the Secondary IDE of my ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard. The DVD
is master, and the CD-R/RW is slave (this configuration had previously worked
for years). The CD-R/RW is a Samsung SW-232B (and I just updated the
firmware). The LITE_ON SOHD-16P9sv. Both have worked flawlessly before this
"event." My hard drives are both Western Digital, the master is 60gig, the
slave is 40gig (the 40gig is the slave hard drive I alude to above). Both
hard drives are on the Primary IDE of my mother board. Any ideas why I can't
access the CD-R/RW and DVD via Windows XP explorer? (oh, by the way, I
deleted "upper" and "lower" limits associated with the drives in the
Registry per an on-line Microsoft Support suggestion with no impact). Could
this be some sort of Volume corruption? Some XP "remembering" problem?
Thanks in advance for your help. Paul

Your welcome,

Though, I am not sure I understand completely what the problem is now, the
slave HDD is or is not being seen by the OS..? Both optical drives as you
indicate are now able to see your data and play DVD's..

What program do you use to write to the CD-R/RW drive..?

Are you trying to use the inbuilt XP burning capabilities.?

Jaymon: I am gratified by your continued involvement in this nasty issue.
Anyway, the following provides some clarity:
Immediately after applying your TweekUI suggestion yesterday, I was able to
play a DVD. That is: I put a DVD into the DVD drive, right clicked on the
mouse, and one of the choices was to "play with PowerDVD," which is the
software I have on my PC for playing DVDs. Today when a put a DVD into the
DVD drive, the icon in MY COMPUTER changes to indicate that a DVD is in the
drive, but when I double-click on the drive, or right-click with the mouse,
the message "Please insert a disk into drive M:" appears. (this is the
characterization of the original problem). If I put a CD into my CD drive,
the icon in MY COMPUTER changes to indicate that a CD is in the drive, but if
I right-click on the drive or double-click it, the message: "Please insert a
disk into drive N" appears. (the drives are labeled M and N as part an
earlier trouble-shooting effort which was to change the drive letters). This
(now) is ALL characteristic of the original problem. If I go to CONTROL
PANEL, then ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, then COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, then DISK
MANAGEMNT, I can see the drives, open the media on the drives, play the DVD,
....media access in DISK MANAGMENT works exactly as one would EXPECT disk
access to work simply by going to the drives through MY COMPUTER. I hope
this is clear. Thanks again for your kinds involvement. I have been around
computers for quite some time, and this has me baffled. I suspect some
registry entry has been changed by something.

Hi paul,

Might check the Upper & Lower filters for the optical drives..?

The easiest way to check without going into the registry, would be to go to
Device Manager, open DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click one of your optical
drives, select properties from the menu, Details tab, you should see "Device
Instance Id" and a drop down arrow (v), click it, move the mouse pointer
down the list to highlight Device Upper filters and click it, do the same
for the Device Lower filters, Class Upper & Lower filters as well to see and
take note of their contents.. Also, there should be just 4 MS signed drivers
in the Drivers tab, driver details button, driver files details window, may
want to check, your call..

MS signed drivers: cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.dll (if you
see others they may be causing exclusive lock issues)

What, if any extra drivers/entries do you see in the filters or on the
drivers tab..?

Please list them if you would, thanks.. (may help determine what drivers are
trying to access the drive)

To reinstall the MS generic cdrom drivers.. In my computer, tools, folder
options, view tab, in advanced settings, you'll need to first mark "show
hidden files and folders", then uncheck the box for "Hide extensions of
known file types".. Now you can go to the windows\INF folder and find
"cdrom.inf" and right click it, select install from the menu.. Remember to
change back to your original settings in folder options..

Also, could have a possible autoplay relationship in some cases..?

Look these links over, your call..

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/e...ding/autoplay/autoplay2k_using.asp?frame=true

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en

May need to try the Autoplay Repair Wiz..

Did you just uncheck the box in TweakUI>My Computer>autoplay>Types.. Or, did
you uncheck the box next to the drive letters for the CD/DVD drives as well
in TweakUI>My Computer>autoplay>Drives, or do both..?

Cheers

Ran the CDgone utility you provided. CD and DVD drivers now include only the

I have a backup of my registry from December 2006 (when all worked as

Well Paul, that's gona have to be your call..
Is it worth it for a $30 drive or would you be better off to just get a new
one, perhaps a DVD/CD-RW combo drive for $20-$30 more..? Would hate to see
it not work for you, though you could make a registry backup now, and return
to your original settings if it didn't work, I guess..
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
See the above link for a nice little Registry backeruper..
Before the Holidays, I bought a new 16x Memorex DVD/CD-RW dual format,
double layer, drive that came bundled (locked) with Nero 6, for around $60
at CompUSA..
I'm pleased, so far with the new drive.. There is no guarantee that
restoring the registry will work if the drive is indeed defective..

My suggestion would be to create a registry backup and try testing the
autoplay with the ARS tool..
You might try Uwe's new Auto Run Settings tool, included in the previous
post.. Open the tool, under local machine (all users) see if you can under
"Drive Types" (restore) check the box for CD/DVD insert notification
([disabled] mine is unchecked) [requires a reboot].. For current user "Drive
Types" I have my CD/DVD box unchecked, for current user "Drives" I have my
G:& H: drive letters unchecked, this effectively has disabled autoplay for
the optical drives and has allowed me to use software and media (manually)
without a problem, you may need to experiment for your preferred settings..

Hope it can help
Good luck

I restored the registry backup I had from December 2006, and now accessing
both the CD-R/RW and the DVD drives works correctly. If there is some
utility that might compare registry settings identified in reg files, some
clew might be found about what setting change was causing my problems, but
short of that, I will probably never know. How would such a registry change
happen? So it goes. Your directing me to registry issues was the key tip.

Please list them if you would, thanks.. (may help determine what
drivers
are
trying to access the drive)

To reinstall the MS generic cdrom drivers.. In my computer, tools,
folder
options, view tab, in advanced settings, you'll need to first mark
"show
hidden files and folders", then uncheck the box for "Hide
extensions
of
known file types".. Now you can go to the windows\INF folder and
find
"cdrom.inf" and right click it, select install from the menu..
Remember
to
change back to your original settings in folder options..

Also, could have a possible autoplay relationship in some cases..?

Look these links over, your call..

May need to try the Autoplay Repair Wiz..

Did you just uncheck the box in TweakUI>My
Computer>autoplay>Types..
Or,
did
you uncheck the box next to the drive letters for the CD/DVD drives
as
well
in TweakUI>My Computer>autoplay>Drives, or do both..?

Cheers

nasty
issue.
Anyway, the following provides some clarity:
Immediately after applying your TweekUI suggestion yesterday, I
was
able
to
play a DVD. That is: I put a DVD into the DVD drive, right
clicked
on
the
mouse, and one of the choices was to "play with PowerDVD," which
is
the
software I have on my PC for playing DVDs. Today when a put a
DVD
into
the
DVD drive, the icon in MY COMPUTER changes to indicate that a DVD
is
in
the
drive, but when I double-click on the drive, or right-click with
the
mouse,
the message "Please insert a disk into drive M:" appears. (this
is
the
characterization of the original problem). If I put a CD into my
CD
drive,
the icon in MY COMPUTER changes to indicate that a CD is in the
drive,
but
if
I right-click on the drive or double-click it, the message:
"Please
insert
a
disk into drive N" appears. (the drives are labeled M and N as
part
