Xvid casing the problems

Dj

When I try to use the automovie feature of WMM for a vob file that I ripped
from a dvd, that plays perfectly back in the program, WMM just shuts down. I
get this message from problem reports:

Address a problem with XviD

XviD has stopped working properly.

It's not telling me exactly why it's stopped working correctly or how it's
not working so I have no idea where to go from here. I don't even know what
this codec/audio thing does! What's its significance to a computer full of
different codecs/audio\video support things?

I've actually never successfully been able to use the automovie feature in
WMM because the videos I uploaded before I guess weren't long enough?
I clicked on it and it did nothing with my previous footage (which was in
avi format if that matters).

I had to use the split button to break my other footage into different
parts. It refuses to do anything with the ripped dvd footage.

XviD files can be problematic in Movie Maker...
might be worth a try to convert the file to the .wmv
format before importing.

More info:

Movie Maker 2 -
Importing AVI Files
http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Importing-Video-AVI.html
(See the right pane ; "Divx and Xvid Encoded AVI Files")

The following freeware can do the conversion.

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System
Restore point before installing software or updates)

Format Factory
http://www.pcfreetime.com/
(FWIW...when installing...you may want to uncheck
all the boxes on the final screen)

And...maybe you can find help at the following site:

VideoHelp

I just did and it didn't do anything I opened WMM and it crashed again when I
tried adding footage to the storyline.

The footage was working perfectly fine before it just started doing this the
day I posted this. Actually the footage I tried to drag to the timeline today
was in avi format and it crashed once again. This footage plays perfectly
fine in Windows Media Player and has never had problems before. I'm starting
to think something I downloaded recently messed up the codec, but it's not
the footage as it's been on my computer for over a month now. The other
footage was ripped to my computer about a month ago as well and never had
problems in WMM until recently.

I hear you but .avi files are known to cause problems
in Movie Maker...if not when importing and/or editing
it can happen while rendering...anyway...converting
is simple...why not try it?

Ok...if it's a recent issue and you think something
caused it...do a system restore to a time before it
occurred.

And it may be worth a try to open Movie Maker and
go to...Tools / Options / Compatibility tab and uncheck
all the filters / OK.

There are many types of .avi files and just because
you can play a file in Windows Media Player is no
guarantee that it will be compatible with Movie Maker.

The following freeware can identify the codec an
..avi file was created with...maybe it will be useful.

GSpot Super Quick Start
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/quick_start.html
(to download GSpot...left click "GSpot zip file" in the first paragraph
....then...download the file to your desktop / unzip the file and run it...
no installation is required)

Assessing Video Files and Codecs with GSpot
http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/PapaJohn/68/Gspot.aspx

You may even want to try installing one of the following
codec packs.

(FWIW...it's always best if you create a System Restore
point before installing any software or updates.)

*Proceed At Your Own Risk*

1) Info about CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)
http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

2) K-Lite Codec Pack (Full)
http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/

Good luck...
