video not converting into final file

I've used WMM often with files from the same camera and have had no problems
editing files, adding transitions etc...however, I imported a slightly larger
(.avi) file the other day and I can see all of it in the editing mode, but
when I convert it/make a movie about 3/4 of the video is blank/black. The
audio is fine. I tried cropping the file down etc. I even downloaded windows
media encoder and converted the file BEFORE editing...and got even LESS
visible video.

I also tried using the raw file to make a video (no editing etc) and same
result.

Any help? It's awesome footage.

Imported from elsewhere, or "captured" from "the same camera"?

Also define, "slightly larger" if you would.

Converted it to what?

How large is the original .avi?

WIll it play normally all the way through in WMP?

How much free RAM and HD space do you have available?

When was the last time you defragmented the HD you are attempting to render
the video on?

captured from the same camera. video'd with this camera, transfered file
into WMM (as always). I usually just "drag and drop" my avi files in, but I
also tried the import function with no difference.

This file is 1G
All the other files I've worked with are 750MG or smaller.

converted it to a WMV file as the online help implied that would be more
likely to work.
The original file will play perfectly in WMP
I have 200G HD space. Not certain of RAM

Have not defragmented, but did an "analyse" with the defragmenter and it
says not needed (and the band looks really clean).

That's pretty big depending on what you have to work with machine-wise.

The .wmv file should be significantly smaller than the .avi. Is it? And
does IT (the .wmv) play OK in WMP as well?

Yes, but how much of that 200GB is *free*?

Start>All Programs>Accesories>System Tools>System Information:

The first screen will show you how much memory you have, and what's
*available* at the moment both physical and virtual. Once you detemirmine
those numbers you can then go to the left hand pane and expand
components>storage>drives and see how much *free* HD space you have to work
with.

OK. Let's see the numbers from above and try and work from there.

The wmv is somewhat smaller. It also plays fine in WMP... as I said it also
does not finalize properly.

Total Physical Memory = 2048MB (2GB?)
Available Physical Memory = 1.21GB
Total Virtual Memory = 2GB
Available Virtual Memory = 1.96GB
Page File = 3.85GB

Free Space = 204GB
