xpsp2 Install trouble... please help

I get this error:

You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system
administrator.

I am the administrator. I logged on as local admin even. The system is
joined to a domain. If I remove it from the domain I can install SP2. I
tried using GPOs as well and that didn't work.

here is a screenshot to the error:

Hi

Do a global registry search (in regedit.exe) for registry values with name
NoWindowsUpdate
and
DisableWindowsUpdateAccess

and delete if found.

Is anyone able to help?

Mark,

apparently not. I can only say that the error message looks very
much like a system policy to me. Have you looked through all of
those? I don't know them offhand.

Is any third party software installed on the computer that could
possibly have changed any such policy?

It happens on a fresh install of Windows XP even. So there is no 3rd party
software creating this issue. With no one knowing and nothing in their
knowlege base I can't see why I should pay $250 to call them and get
support. This is so frustrating.

I agree with Hans, it sounds like you're running into a domain group policy
restriction. Are you the domain admin? If not, this may only be fixable by
that person.

Mark, Gary,

yes, I'd bet on that too. The domain admin simply set a domain
policy disallowing updates by the users. Some admins do that,
and it does make some sense, even.

Mark,
I had the same problem. I think I've tried everything possible. So fa
I've only found one fix, a temporary one, and that's to give the use
enterprise admin rights. If someone else has a better idea let me know
I'm not comfortable giving everyone enterprise admin rights but i
works.
Thanks,
wjc
