I have xp pro upgrade legitimately installed & activated on an elderly pc. I
want to effectively reinstall it on a different machine, as I need to change
HD, MB memory, graphics, network card cdrom etc. The original hardware will
be scrapped.

If I keep the existing HD in the case can I install the upgrade on a new
(larger) drive without installing 98se first, having changed the above
hardware, or will the activation process get upset? If so, what stages do I
need to go through to keep it happy.

I am looking to do a clean install with an upgrade disc, is this possible if
I keep the upgraded xp os on another drive?

Hi Chris,

You can do a clean install with the upgrade CD. You will be
asked to insert the Win98 CD to satisfy the compliance check.
Some "Restore Disks" may not satisfy the compliance check.
In this case you would have to install Win98 first and them upgrade.
Or purchase another Win98 CD on eBay or the like.

Making this many hardware changes may require you to
reactivate by phone to Microsoft.

Many thanks Bert - seems as though I can go ahead (after backing up my
critical data naturally!)

OK all went well, I replaced everything except the case! Did a cold install
from the upgrade disc, needed my original w98se disc. Install & sp2 fine.
Remembered to transfer my settings.

On reactivation, online wasn't playing ball and referred me to a UK
freephone number. Followed the online prompts entering key data as requested
and getting back a new code which worked fine.

So thanks again for the advice
