XPe with Service pack 2

Bill

Can anyone with MS please confirm when the expected date
or at least the month this will be released? I have seen
comments to look for it in November but is there an
official or unofficial schedule?

Thanks

Hi Bill,

For now you can download Windows XP SP2 Technical Preview.
This should be enough to keep you going (in case that you don't need to deploy image to customers)

Best regards,

Mark,

The Tech Previews are usually release candidates. (RCx) in that case, they
are still "beta" caliber, and subject to changes in the binaries, prior to
Release to Manufacturing (RTM). Usually, once an RTM build is deployed, that
is what will be released and distributed.

I have installed it last night and so far it looks nice. I will see what happens next.
If for nothing else having new changed documentation is nice.

Regards,
Slobodan

PS:
Be prepared for a very long installation and patience. (Depending on your computer)
Few times I though that installation frozen, but it was just a very slow.

Slow download. I've got 162kb of 257mb after 2 hours. Not sure where the
bottleneck is. Anyone else have faster downloads?

J

JC

Yeah, it was pretty fast for me... I downloaded the whole thing in about 20
Minutes. Maybe the MS Servers are experiencing a heavy load (sounds
official, right? :) )

not sure where you bottleneck is.

JC or anyone,
Can you tell me what the version number is for the build
at the below location?

I have a friend playing with 1633 and I want to make sure
he is using the latest files.

Hi Bill,

What version are you talking about,?
Technology preview is available from this Monday to download. What ever that he have is older.

KM

Slobodan,

What did you mean by "nice"? :)
The tools have not been changed. Only some components added and embedded features updated.
Although the help system now looks definitely nice (finally some component dependency info is available).

He probably means the Database SP2 package build number (again, tools have not been changed but database and repository have).

I have not played around the Tech.Preview yet but the latest RC I've got here (and the Tech.Preview must be >= this RC) has the SP2
package build # 2171 (Revision 2117).

Konstantin,

Nice like help, Registry configured EWF that support more volumes, and other features not present in SP1.
Like I said I just switched from SP1 to SP2, and I need to see what has been added and fixed.

It would be nice that tools have been modified, but even current tools can be used.

Best regards,
Slobodan

KM

Understood. That is basically what I said.

No doubt, the current tools can be used. However, there are going to be some transition issue for TD projects from SP1 to SP2.
Check out SP2 beta newsgroup for some of the issues identified.

Konstantin

Can I access it without betaid?
I have not registered in XPe beta program.

No, I don't think so :-( Sorry about that.

I suspect only BetaID will give you the access. And, of course, no google archive for that NG. Maybe MS has their own archive for
beta newsgroups.

I've tried several times, restarted my PC, downloaded the web install
program again, turned off my personal firewall, and nothing helps.
I'm getting a transfer rate of 100k/hour. At that rate, it will take 108
days to download the SP2 preview using the web install program.
Does the web install program play nicely with corporate firewalls?

OK. I turned off a bunch of stuff, including,
IE
Outlook
Sql server
SETI@Home BOINK
Roboform tray
WinAmp tray
Quicktime tray
Incredibuild
PasswordCourier
SpyBot realtime protection

And, it downloaded quickly. Something was in the way.
