I have a box with XP Home that shares a broadband
connection and when it goes into hibernation and wakes up
again, it can't connect to the internet without a
reboot. I troubleshooted many things:

1)Replaced the factory installed Realtek nic with a new
Dlink nic with updated drivers. I've selected the option
for it not to go into power save but this doesn't work.

2)I tried typing ipconfig /release then /renew and still
no internet connection.

3)The DHCP and IP are automatically detected and only the
reboot allows it to reach the internet.

4)The router is setup to renew ip every 2 weeks. I
suspect that the ISP changes my leased IP every few hours
since if I do a quick hibernation and then wake it up it
works fine, but my other box nevers has a quirk over a
long period of time.

My other box running 2000 Pro works fine eveytime out of
hibernation with a LinkSys nic. I'll take the Dlink nic
back and buy another LinkSys nic, but I still think it
might be a quirk with XP Home. Can anyone help me before
I make a run to town!?

Thanks!

Have the same problem with a wireless router.
I put a shortcut to the connection on my QuickLaunch bar.
Most of the time on waking up, I have to click on the
icon, disable de connection, then reconnect.

I have a problem very similar to the one you described on the XP
newsgroup. I have a D-Link wireless router connected to my cable modem.
My XP Pro computer connects to the router by Ethernet cable, and an ME
computer uses a wireless card to connect. When I first boot the XP I
get a normal internet connection. If I leave the XP unattended for a
while, my browser & e-mail program can no longer find the ISP servers.
Sometimes I can get back on the internet by logging off and back on; but
other times it requires a reboot. The ME computer doesn't seem to have
this problem, so I think it must be an issue with XP.

With Wireless connections, make sure the option to use
802 Wireless authentication is unchecked on the properties
Tab of the Local Area Connection.
