XP2 Problem

A.V. Dafney

I very recently dowloaded Microsoft XP2 which automatically
installed itself.
Right afer that my Outlook Express refused to work at
all. Every time I tried I received the following:

"The host 'mail.comcast.net' could not be found. Please
verify that you have entered the server name correctly.
Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'mail.comcast.net',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D"

I tried to connect with Microsoft to no avail. In the
meantime I ordered a CD of Microsoft XP2 (which is free),
hoping that if I re-install it, it will correct the error.

Delivery of XP 2 is 4-6 weeks!

Can any one suggest a fix?

Thanks.

Are you using an AV program with "e-mail scanning"
If so, turn that off.

So long as you have its real-time scanning module installed, the e-mail
scanning is superfluous.
The e-mail scanning modules increase your chances interfering with your
e-mail retrieval (and can also aid in corrupting your mail store on your
computer).

Check in its Tools - Accounts, the mail account concerned and
Properties. Make sure the Server page has the POP and SMTP servers
correctly set: if they are on 'localhost' you may be running some
auxiliary ant-spam program like spamihilator, and it needs to be
re-installed.

Also check the windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file (edit in Notepad
- it has no extension). Apart from comment lines starting # it should
have just
127.0.0.1 localhost

and any other referring to your mail servers would be worth commenting
out with a lead #

What is XP2 that you keep referring to?

Assuming here that you are referring to SP2 (Service Pack2)...

Open Outlook Express, click TOOLS menu|ACCOUNTS|MAIL|PROPERTIES and verify
that the info there matches what Comcast Net specifies. If confused, give
them a call...to help you through the process.

Many thanks alex. I have tried all that you have suggested. checked the
accounts tab and all the server addresses. seems to be correct. the hosts
file also has the proper entries.
i have seen that OE crashes only when i am connected to the net and try to
open the program when it goes online and crashes. however when i am not
connected the program opens up. all this started after i installed SP2. till
such time i did not encounter any problem at all.
Do you get any clues from this .
Thanks once again

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Disable Background Compacting (N/A in SP2) and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Any better now?
