xp won't work after download of patches

I have windows xp home. I downloaded a critical update
from the official windows site and when i restarted it
came up that a file was missing or corrupt. Please insert
orginal set up cd and push r for repair. HP doesn's ship
media with its computers. How do I do this if the computer
did not come with media? It was a brand new machine as
well.

try doing a System restore to a point before you did the update.
Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System restore
