XP won't recognize recordable disk after first disk eject

The hardware:

Sony VAIO PCG-R505 notebook, with docking station
Matshita UDJA730 DVD/CD-R/W drive in docking station, connects via 1394
interface
Windows XP Professional, no service pack

The problem:
After starting or restarting Windows, the first recordable CD I put in the
drive gets recognized correctly. "Properties..." shows the correct
used/free split, and the file system is CDFS. I can add files to the CD
with no problem.

After ejecting the first CD, the drive will no longer correctly recognize a
recordable CD. If the CD is partially full, "Properies..." shows the disk
as 100% full, whether there's one file or a full 650MB. If it's blank, it
will show as 0KB but 100% full. The file system always displays as
"unknown". If I attempt to record a file, the wizard generates a "no
recordable disk in the drive" error.

If I rescan or refresh the disk partitions in Disk Administrator, there is
no change.

If I select the drive properties, disable CD recording, then re-enable it, I
can record to the CD. As soon as I eject it, I'm back to the above problem.

Where can I begin to troubleshoot this? I've reininstalled and updated the
Sony drivers with no effect.

Try using your writer software to 'dismount' the cd before
ejecting it.
Read the user instructions or help file for your writer
software.

I am using the built-in CD writing function of Windows XP. I not only read
the online help, but searched the knowledgebase thoroughly before posting.
