Following the advice below, within Repair I see that the NTFS partition is
there, so I successfully format it and then reboot and start the XP install
again. Since C is already an NTFS I leave it alone and continue with the
install. Once I reach the Red Bar followed, the reboot completes and I get
the Disk Read error again and XP wants to start the install over from
scratch.
Any other ideas ?

Well, it's probably some hardware probably a hardware problem, but my
suggestion is the diskpart utility
Boot to the XP setup CD,press 'R" for the repair prompt, and run the command
DISKPART to remove the existing partition, recreate
them , and then boot to CD, and run Setup. (There is also a Format there you
might try)
