xp won't boot with non-boot drive but other O/S's do

After my pc came out of hibernation I plugged in a usb key and got a BSOD,
the pc rebooted and never got past the XP boot screen on a normal boot but I
was able to boot into Safe Mode and run a Restore Point but that did not fix
the issue. Eventually I figured out it was my extra hard disk preventing XP
to boot in normal mode, however I can boot into Vista (i have a dual boot
system but hardly use Vista) with the disk online and I took the drive to
another XP machine and booted up with it with no issues.

SO, it appears something is up with this build of XP since the drive is
okay.

Any ideas on why the disk will boot on XP on another machine and also boot
on Vista on the machine that has the corrupted (??) version of XP?

I should add that I have an ePower 500W PS with a 8600GT 6600/Dual Core on a
Gigabyte S3 965 mobo. The system has some odd behavior - I press the power
button and the system appears to start and then the fans (psu and 120mm's)
start to turn on and spin e.g. the fans don't immediately turn kick in on
power up - same deal when coming out of hibernation. Not sure if this adds
anything.

Thanks for any feedback.

Nothing for sure, but you may need to do a repair install to get it
working again. I suspect that it's seeing the Vista install first and
the XP is not able to be selected.
