Seemingly out of the blue, my computer has decided it will not boot up.

HD is 160GB and because I only have 50GB free, I was deleting medi
files last night. Computer has been running sluggishly for a couple o
weeks now and scanning for viri (viruses?) and spyware has foun
nothing.

Bought computer in March 2004 from a big box retailer (first mistake,
know) and had a fried motherboard by December. Motherboard was replaced
but only 7 months later something else awful is occurring.

I get the Foxcom screen with instructions on how to get to the Pos
screen and to BIOS, I get the Post screen, but then I get a blac
screen with this message:

"We apologise for the inconvience but windows did not star
successfully a recent hardware or software change might have cause
this if your computer stopped responding restarted unexpectally o
automatically shut down to protect your files and folders choose you
last known good configuration:

1. boot in safe mode
2. boot in safe mode with networking
3. boot in safe mode with command prompt..."

I've tried rebooting it various times using the different options bu
it always loops back to this message.

Tried using an XP Boot floppy, which I purchased online via this olde
'puter and rebooted with that disk but it made no difference.

Have played around (dangerous, I know) in BIOS and tried changing th
boot sequence, to no avail. Changed values all back to default but i
made no difference.

Computer came preloaded with XP and as such I don't have an XP disk o
any sort for any type of recovery/repair/reinstall. Am also reall
hoping to avoid a reinstall because I have a 160GB HD with about 80G
of data I don't wish to lose.

Am going to be paying stupid fees to a computer repairman shortly if
can't remedy this...any suggestions?

ANY help at all would be muchly, muchly appreciated -- without m
computer I feel so lost! :-

This has happened to me also. This morning Windows will not boot, it just
sits at the splash screen. I changed no config files before the last
shutdown. This is a real problem. I will make a seperate post but I wanted
to let you know that this has happened to me also - no doubt Windows Update
has worked it's magic again.

Jude.

My desktop is having the same problem, but I have not installed any new
hardware or software, I tried to reboot various times in the ways indicated
but none worked. I will also post an individual message. Hopefully someone
can help save our files.
